The Dell Dimension 4550 is one of Dell's entry-level desktop computers. But as with any computer, the 4550's performance can be improved through upgrading. Almost every component on the Dell 4550's motherboard can be upgraded, which can improve everything from the computer's performance to its storage capabilities.
RAM
The 4550 features two bays for memory sticks. Depending on your preferred memory configuration, you can add or replace memory for the 4550. Additional memory improves your computer's processing overhead and allows for it to run faster.
Video Card
The 4550 also features an AGP slot, which is dedicated for graphics cards. If you want to do high-end computer gaming or other intensive graphics-based tasks, you can install a dedicated graphics card into the AGP port on your 4550's motherboard.
Hard Drive
Unlike newer motherboards, the 4550 only features a single hard drive IDE slot, but if you want to improve your computer's storage, you can swap out your current hard drive for a larger model. Simply unplug your older hard drive and install the new one in its place.
CD Drive
Similarly, the 4550's motherboard features another IDE connector for its CD drive. If you want to switch out the current CD drive with a faster burner or other IDE-based device, all you have to do is remove the old drive and replace it with the newer model.
PCI
As with every desktop computer, the 4550's motherboard features a standard set of PCI slots. These PCI slots can be used for a variety of different things, ranging from dedicated audio processors to additional network connection cards.
