The Difference Between A Motherboard & Processor

The motherboard and processor (also known as CPU or central processing unit) are two vital components of a computer. Both of these components function in different ways, but together they make up the foundation of every computer.

Motherboard

A motherboard is a series of circuits printed on a board that allow a computer's processor, RAM and other components to communicate with each other to provide a computer with functionality.

Processor

A processor is essentially the brain of a computer. It takes in the information that is given by a program or process on your computer, and sends back information to determine what the computer should do.

Warning

Not all motherboards and processors are compatible. Since motherboards come in different sizes and socket types, you must have a compatible processor that matches the socket type of the motherboard, in order for the two components to function properly together.
