Update the BIOS in a Toshiba laptop to keep all components running smoothly.
Updating, or flashing, your computer's BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is among the most feared maintenance you can perform on your computer. The BIOS is a small chip on which all your system's basic information is stored. This includes information about your keyboard controls, date and time information, and programming that lets the computer communicate with its processor. A BIOS update is usually performed by experienced computer repair technicians when a laptop's motherboard, or hardware is behaving erratically. If done incorrectly, a BIOS update can cause the hardware connected to your motherboard to stop working.
Instructions
1. Navigate to the Toshiba laptop support page (see Resources) from your preferred Web browser. Click on the "Download" link.
2. Select "Laptops" in the "Choose Category" column of the Downloads page. Select the type of Toshiba laptop you have. Select your laptop's exact model number in the "Choose Model" column of the page.
3. Locate the latest BIOS download on your laptop's download page. Each download is accompanied by the date each download was made available. Double-click on the BIOS update link, and then click on the "Run" button once the Windows security warning appears.
4. Click on the "Unzip" button followed by the "OK" button. Wait for the BIOS utility window to appear, and then close all other windows and applications except for the BIOS utility window.
5. Click on the "Install From Windows" button in the BIOS utility window. Click on the "OK" button to proceed with the BIOS update. This process may take a few minutes depending on your laptop's model.
6. Click on the "OK" button once the update is complete to exit the BIOS utility program.
