Test For Slow Memory

Slow or sluggish memory can create a frustrating computing experience. Identifying the cause of slow memory will help you to properly correct the problem. In some cases, clearing the CMOS cache is enough to solve the issue, while in some cases the actual RAM module may need to be replaced. Microsoft has released a free memory diagnostics tool that will help you diagnose the cause of your computing slow downs.

Instructions

1. Download the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool from Microsoft's website (see "Resources").

2. Locate the file that was downloaded using Windows Explorer and double click the file. The file is called "mtinst.exe."

3. Click "Save Image to Disk" and choose an easy to remember location to save the ISO file to.

4. Open your ISO burning software. If you do not have an ISO burning application, there are several free options available online such as ImgBurn, CDBurnerXP and Alcohol 120% (see "Resources"), all of which operating in a similar manner.

5. Click the "Add file" button in your ISO burning software and then select the saved ISO file to load it into the program.

6. Insert a blank CD into your CD burner and click "Burn" or "Write."

7. Restart your computer once the disc has been burnt. Leave the disc in the CD drive when you restart the computer. Once the computer loads, it will automatically run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool and then will report any errors that may be occurring in your system's memory.
