Intel Conroe Core 6600 Vs 6600 Quad Core

The Intel Conroe Core 6600 and 6600 Quad Core refer to the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, which is codenamed "Conroe"; and the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600. Both belong to the Core 2 brand of desktop and laptop processors, or central processor units, from semiconductor company Intel Corp. Debuting in 2006 and 2007, respectively, the E6600 and Q6600 are alike in many respects, although their membership in different divisions in the Core 2 family results in a few distinguishing factors.

Cores, Manufacture and Socket

The Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 is named after its dual-core design, which means that it has two processing units. The Q6600 belongs to the Core 2 division --- the Core 2 Quad --- that contains quad-core chips. This makes the Q6600 twice as powerful as the E6600. Both CPUs, however, use the 65-nanometer manufacturing process; thus, they share the same 37.5-square millimeter package size.

Speeds and Socket

The Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 and Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 have a 2.4-GHz processing speed and 1,066-MHz data transfer speed. For enabling the latter, Intel manufactured them for fitting on Land Grid Array 775, or Socket T. This is a CPU socket that connects the processor with the motherboard for data transfer, as well provides physical support and protection from potential damage.

Cache and Power Consumption

Each Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 and Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 has two caches --- a Level 1 cache and Level 2 cache --- which function as components for the processor to access computer data in a faster way than going for the system memory. Intel Corp. lists the storage capacity of the L2 cache as 4 MB for the E6600 and 8 MB for the Q6600. The E6600, however, consumes up to 65 watts in power, which makes it more energy efficient than the Q6600 at 105 W.

Technologies

Both Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 and Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 are 64-bit processors, meaning that they can handle data sizes of up to 64 bits. Also included on each CPU are SpeedStep for increasing performance while conserving power, virtualization for multiple operating systems sharing CPU resources ,and execute disable bit for protection against viruses and malicious-code attacks.
