Gaming PCs are high specification machines that are powerful enough to run the latest video games. There are many options to consider when building a gaming computer as there are thousands of different hardware combinations that can do the job.
Budget
It is important to set a budget and then shop for parts you can get in your price range. You should be able to build a gaming machine with good specifications starting at around $650.
Processor
You will need a powerful processor to play the latest games, with the two major manufacturers in this field being Intel and AMD. The Intel Core i5 and Core i7 are popular gaming processors at the moment, and AMD offers an alternative with its Phenom X4 models.
Motherboard
The motherboard is the hub of a computer's internal components and is where everything is connected. Most motherboards will support only one type of processor (CPU), so make sure the one you choose will match up with your processor. Motherboard makers specify which processors their boards are capable with. Also consider getting a board that will have the number of USB ports you desire and enough PCI Express slots for graphics, sound and other add-on cards.
RAM
Make sure the RAM, or random access memory, you buy is compatible with your motherboard. It should be the DDR2 or DDR3 type. Ideally you want as much RAM as possible to run demanding games, with 1 to 2 gigabytes being the minimum and at least four being the recommended.
Graphics Card
This will produce all of the game's graphics and so is an important component. Getting a PCI Express compatible card will mean you can put in additional graphics cards of the same model and link them to produce even more power. It is recommended that you buy the best graphics card you can afford within your budget.
Other Components
The other parts that you will need to build the gaming PC are typical of all computers. They include a hard drive, DVD drive and a case to house all of them.
