Media Processor Hardware Installation

You will install most media processor hardware in a PCI-e slot.

Installing the media processor in your computer (i.e. the graphics processor -- which is responsible for displaying media on your computer) requires installing a graphics card. The card is typically installed in either an AGP slot (on older computers) or a PCI-e slot (all new computers sold as of February, 2011, use PCI-e slots). In both cases, the process shouldn't take more than a few minutes of your time, though it will require opening up your computer.

Instructions

1. Unplug everything from your computer and rest the case on a table or other flat surface. Touch the metal part of the computer case to ground yourself against static electricity.

2. Remove the two screws on the right side of your computer case (note that some computers have a latch instead; if the screws are not standard Phillips head screws or thumb screws, look for a latch). Slide the cover off the side of your computer.

3. Locate the AGP or PCI-e slot on your computer. Most computers have just one, which is slightly offset from the other slots.

4. Position the graphics card with your media processor over the slot with the back of the card (where the silver piece with the plugs is) facing the back of the computer. Push down until the card will not go down any farther.

5. Secure the card in place with a small screw. Replace the cover on the side of the computer and then replace the screws. Plug everything back in.
