Ibm T40 Motherboard Common Problems

The T40 ThinkPad is in IBM's T-series of laptops.

The ThinkPad laptop contains the T40 motherboard. A common problem with the IBM T40 is loose chips, which lose their connection to the motherboard. Resoldering is a quick fix.

Facts on IBM T40

The ThinkPad is a laptop computer that was once manufactured by IBM. IBM sold that PC group to Lenovo. IBM is however still involved in the marketing and support of the laptop.

Problems

The IBM T40 motherboard has a GPU problem and a FlewView display problem. To overcome the flex problem, which also caused the problem with the GPU video chip, the manufacturer had to reduce the motherboard flex and the physical location of the GPU to the edge of motherboard.

Considerations

Those that own a IBM ThinkPad T40 laptop and encounter the GPU problem should consider the GPU solder re-balling technique or reflow their laptop's motherboard, which simply means to re-solder the SMD chip to ensure there are no loose connections from the motherboard. If problems continue, the computer user may want to consider a motherboard replacement or contact Lenovo or IBM customer support for assistance.
