Socket 939 Vs Socket 775

The central processing unit of a computer sits in a socket, or mounting location, on the motherboard. There are many types of CPU sockets, including socket 939 and socket 775.

Manufacturers

The two largest manufacturers of CPUs are AMD and Intel. Socket 939 is an AMD socket type; it will not accommodate non-AMD processors. Socket 775 is an Intel socket type, and is only compatible with Intel processors.

Pins

Socket 939 uses 939 pins to transfer data to and from the CPU. Socket 775 has 775 contacts, which touch the CPU pins and thereby transfer data.

Supported CPU Speeds

Socket 939 can fit chips with speeds of 1.8 to 3 GHz. Socket 775 can fit chips with speeds of 1.8 to 3.8 GHz.

Processors

Socket 939 supports the Athlon 64, Athlon 64 X2, Opteron and Dual-Core Opteron processors, among others. Socket 775 supports the Celeron 400 series, the Core 2 Duo, Quad and Extreme and the Xeon 300 series, among others.
