The central processing unit socket that the Compaq Presario Media Center SR1917CL -- an entertainment-focused desktop personal computer that computer technology company Hewlett-Packard released in May 2006 -- is Socket 939. A product of Advanced Micro Devices, Socket 939 debuted in 2004 mainly for the company's then-premier Athlon 64, which is known as the first consumer-oriented 64-bit processor brand.
Socket Specifications
Made of organic plastic, Socket 939 is named after the number of pin holes it offers for accommodation of the CPU. It uses the Pin Grid Array, or PGA, form factor. This means that the pin holes are laid out in an orderly, grid-like format. Additionally, the CPU socket uses a Zero Insertion Force for protecting the processor from damage during removal or insertion.
Processor
The processor that is fitted on Compaq Presario Media Center SR1917CL's Socket 939 is the Athlon 64 3500+. It has a 2.2-GHz processing speed, as well as a 1.6-GHz or 2-GHz data transfer speed. AMD included two caches -- a Level 1 cache and Level 2 -- that the CPU uses for high-speed access to the computer's most frequently used data. The L1 cache contains 128KB, while the L2 cache offers 512KB.
Motherboard
Like other CPU sockets, Socket 939 was designed to provide physical and electrical support for the processor on the motherboard, which acts as the PC's "heart," since it contains several of its crucial components. The Compaq Presario Media Center SR1917CL uses the ASUS A8N-LA motherboard from Taiwanese computer product manufacturer ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated. Referred to as Nagami2-GL8E by HP, it contains the Nvidia GeForce 6150 LE chipset, the north bridge of which facilitates the data transfer between the motherboard and the processor.
Compatibility
Socket 939 was primarily made for the 3000+ to 4000+ model numbers of the Athlon 64, which has a processing speed range of 1.8GHz to 2.4GHz; as well as the 3800+ to 4800+ model numbers of its dual-core variant, the Athlon 64 X2. The CPU socket also works with some entries from the enthusiast-geared Athlon 64 FX, the budget-oriented AMD Sempron and its 64-bit version, and the single- and dual-core versions of the server- and workstation-oriented Opteron.
