Dell offers two models of its Studio XPS desktop computer. The first is the Studio XPS 9100, a high-performance model launched in July 2010 that starts at around $1,000 as of April 2011. The second is the Studio XPS 7100, a multimedia Micro-ATX computer, also launched in July 2010, that starts at around $500 as of April 2011.
CPUs
The Studio XPS 9100 can be equipped with one of three CPUs: the Intel Core i7X 990X operating at 3.46 gigahertz with a 12-megabyte cache, the Intel Core I7 960 operating at 3.2 gigahertz with an 8-megabyte cache, and the Intel Core i7 930 operating at 2.8 gigahertz with an 8-megabyte cache. The Studio XPS 7100 can be equipped with one of six CPUs: the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T operating at 3.2 gigahertz with a 0.5-megabyte cache, the AMD Phenom II X6 1045T operating at 2.7 gigahertz with a 9-megabyte cache, the AMD Phenom II X6 1075T, the AMD Phenom II X4 945 operating at 3 gigahertz with an 8-megabyte cache, the AMD Athlon II X4 640 operating at 3 gigahertz with a 2-megabyte cache, and the AMD Phenom II X4 830 with a 2-megabyte cache.
Memory and Storage
The Studio XPS 9100 can be equipped with up to 24 gigabytes of RAM. It uses Tri-Channel DDR3 SDRAM operating at 1333 megahertz. The computer has six DIMMs into which RAM can be plugged. The Studio XPS 9100 may have a hard disk size of up to 2000 gigabytes using SATA drives operating at 7200 rpm. The Studio XPS 7100 can be equipped with up to 16 gigabytes of RAM. The computer uses Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM operating at 1333 megahertz. The RAM is plugged into the 7100's four DIMMs. The 7100 has up to 2000 gigabytes of storage using SATA hard drives operating at 7200 rpm.
Video
Powering the video performance on the Studio XPS 9100 is one of four video cards: the ATI Radeon HD5670 with 1024 megabytes of RAM, the ATI Radeon HD5770 with 1024 megabytes of RAM, the ATI Radeon HD5870 with 1024 megabytes of RAM, or the nVidia GeForce G310 with 512 megabytes of RAM. The Studio XPS 7100 has seven video card options: the ATI Radeon HD 5450 with 1024 megabytes of RAM, the ATI Radeon HD5670 with 1024 megabytes of RAM, the ATI Radeon 5870 with 1024 megabytes of RAM, three AMD-branded versions of these three video cards, and finally, the AMD HD4200 Radeon.
Expansion and Networking
The Studio XPS 9100 has one PCI slot, three PCIe x1 slots, one PCIe x8 slot and one PCIe X16 slot. It has four USB 2.0 ports, a 15-in-1 card reader, a headphone port and a microphone port on the front panel. The rear ports into an IEEE 1394a port, surround-sound audio ports, four USB 2.0 ports, one eSATA port, an S/PDIF port and HDMI ports. It has integrated 10/100/1000 Gigabit LAN through the RJ45 port on the back with optional internal Wireless-N. The Studio XPS 7100 has four SATA slots, one PCI slot, two PCIe x1 slots and one PCIe x16 slot. The 7100 offers two USB 2.0 ports, a headphone port and a microphone port on top. The front has two USB 2.0 ports and a 19-in-1 card reader. The rear has four USB 2.0 ports, one eSATA port, one HDMI port, an SPID/F port, 7.1 audio jacks and a DVI port. It has an integrated 10/100/1000 LAN port with 802.11n Wi-Fi and optional Bluetooth.
Chassis and Power
The Studio XPS 9100 is 19.4 inches high by 7.8 inches wide by 20.7 inches deep. It weighs about 40 pounds. A 525-watt power supply powers the computer. The Studio XPS 7100 is 16.02 inches high by 7.31 inches wide by 17.9 inches deep. It weighs 22.4 pounds. A 460-watt power supply powers it.
Optical Drives
The Studio XPS 9100 can be equipped with a Blu-ray disc player and a DVD +/- RW burner. Dual drives are available. The Studio XPS 7100 offers a 16x DVD+/-RW drive, a Blu-ray Disc combo drive and a Blu-ray disc burner. These can be mounted in dual configurations.
