Intel Gm45 Graphics Card Types

Chipsets like the Intel GM45 are the brain of the motherboard.

The Intel GM45 is a chipset manufactured by Intel for use in notebook computers. Various manufacturers use this chipset in their laptops and the hardware supports a number of video card types. These include integrated graphics, PCI-Express video and external USB video.

Integrated Graphics

Integrated video cards are best suited for casual use.

All Intel GM45 chipsets contain the Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD (GMA X4500 HD). It has 384 MB of memory (shared with the system) and a 400 MHz CPU. It also supports DirectX 10. The GMA X4500 HD is comparable to other entry-level video cards and is designed for casual video demands, such as watching movies and light gaming.

Mobile PCI-Express

There is no set standard for laptop video. Compoents vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

The GM45 chipset supports Mobile PCI-Express, which allows for more powerful video cards to be installed. However, not all laptop motherboards using the GM45 chipset have a PCI-Express slot. What video card you can put in a GM45 laptop depends on the manufacturer and model of the system.

USB Video

Thouands of peripherals interface with computers via USB 2.0.

There is a small but growing market for external USB video cards. These cards use the USB 2.0 ports on the GM45 chipset and while not powerful, can extend your desktop onto a second or third monitor.
