Integrated Vs Dedicated Graphics Card

You can choose an onboard video solution or a dedicated graphics card.

When purchasing a new computer, there are many important components that a buyer can decide on including. Among these options is whether to purchase a dedicated graphics card or an integrated graphics card.

The Basics

The key distinction between a dedicated and integrated graphics card is the physical nature of the hardware. A dedicated graphics card is a separate piece of hardware, while an integrated card is built into the motherboard of the computer.

Cost

Typically, a dedicated graphics card costs much more. As integrated cards are built in as part of the motherboard, they naturally cost less.

Serviceability

While integrated graphics cards may cost less, they do not provide a flexible solution for users who may want to upgrade their graphics card. Integrated cards cannot be modified or changed, and if either the motherboard or the graphics card fails, then both of the components must be replaced. A dedicated card, on the other hand, can be easily swapped out for another if the user wishes to upgrade or replace it.

Performance

The disadvantage of an integrated graphics card mainly lies in performance issues. These graphics solutions tend to share system memory with the RAM on the motherboard, unlike a dedicated card, which has its own memory for its GPU. This results in a slower system when using a dedicated graphics card. As a rule of thumb, dedicated graphics cards perform more efficiently than integrated graphics cards.

Choosing a Flexible System

There are motherboards that feature both an integrated graphics card and an expansion slot for a dedicated graphics card. This type of hardware is ideal for users who are not sure whether they are willing to spend extra money on a dedicated card. It is a way to ensure that if you choose to upgrade, you can simply buy a single new component rather than multiple new parts.
