The BIOS of any computer controls the specifics of the way that machine operates. When you turn on your computer, your processor retrieves instructions from your BIOS. These instructions tell the computer exactly start up, including which hardware to enable and disable. Your computer then loads the Windows operating system. You can reprogram this BIOS using its configuration utility.
Instructions
1. Turn on your computer. If your computer is already on and the Windows operating system is already loaded, click "Start" and select "Restart" to restart your computer.
2. Tap the correct keyboard key to enter the BIOS. No matter who made your computer, this key will be printed on screen during the initial steps of your computer's boot sequence. There are also many charts on the Internet that keep track of these BIOS access keys, separated into charts by computer manufacturer. For example, if you have an HP computer you might not have the same BIOS access key as someone with a Toshiba computer. Pressing the key accesses your BIOS.
3. At the top of the BIOS screen will be a series of categories with names like "Advanced" and "Boot," among others. Use your arrow keys to highlight the appropriate category based on your needs. Press "Enter" to load that category of options.
4. Highlight the BIOS setting you would like to change. Pressing "Enter" will bring up a series of options that you can select for that setting. Pressing "Enter" again will select your desired setting.
5. Look toward the bottom of the screen for the "Save and Exit" BIOS key. Often, this is the "F10" key, but it could be something different in your system. When you're done reprogramming your BIOS, press this key to exit the BIOS and reboot your machine.
