My Hp Pavilion Laptop Cd/Dvd Drive Won'T Work

A stuck CD is a common problem.

Whether you use your HP Pavilion laptop for home or work, having a working CD or DVD drive is very convenient. A functional CD drive allows you listen to your favorite music, while a DVD burner lets you watch your favorite movies and back up your hard drive. When your CD or DVD drives stops working, you want to get it back in service as quickly as possible. But since this problem can have several causes, the best approach is to eliminate each possible cause one at a time.

Instructions

Stuck Drawer

1. Shut down your Pavilion laptop and restart it. Tap the eject button repeatedly while the laptop is rebooting. Move on to the next step if the drawer remains stuck.

2. Locate the small bypass hole just under the eject button. This hole can be hard to find, so you might need a flashlight to locate it.

3. Insert the unbent paper clip into the hole until you hear the drive start to spin. Press on the paper clip until the drawer pops out.

4. Remove the existing CD or DVD and insert another one that you know works. Clean the original DVD if the new one works properly. If the drive locks up again, use the bypass hole to remove the CD or DVD, then insert a laser lens cleaner and run the cleaning program two or three times to remove dirt from the laser.

Drive Not Recognized

5. Log on to your Pavilion laptop and right-click on the "My Computer" icon. Choose "Properties" from the menu.

6. Click on the "Hardware" tab and then the "Device Manager" button. Click the plus sign next to "DVD/CD Drives."

7. Right-click the CD or DVD drive and choose "Update driver" from the list. This will force the operating system to download and install the latest driver for the CD or DVD drive.
