What Computer Components Are Compatible?
A big benefit of the PC revolution was the standardization of hardware. Before the 1980s, every computer company made its own processors, displays and disk drives. Some standards existed, but they were the exception. As PC hardware evolved in the 1980s and '90s, standards emerged to take advantage of this huge marketplace. Many components have now been compatible for years, making it easier to repair, replace and upgrade equipment.
Displays
It's easy to move monitors between computers. During the '80s and most of the '90s, VGA was the dominant standard. It was replaced by the technically superior DVI in 1999.
Memory
While standards exist with RAM memory, it's something you have to be careful with. Different memory modules look the same. For them to work, you must select them to match the memory speed of your computer.
Networking
Early on, it wasn't important to connect computers together. In the 1990s, companies began to work out network standards. Today, with the Internet, TCP/IP and wireless Ethernet have become widely available.
Keyboards and Mice
Keyboards and mice are very compatible between models and brands. In the past, the PS/2 connector was used. Most now use USB.
Disk Drives
Hard disks and CD/DVD drives are another example of evolving standards. Beginning with the early IDE connector and going through SCSI and SATA, drive makers have concentrated on using a few interfaces.
