Upgrade your laptop's motherboard.
Your laptop's motherboard is the single most important component inside your computer. It is where all hardware components and devices connect with your computer. This includes everything from your computer's processor to the hard drive. If your motherboard is not working properly, your laptop is basically useless. Most replacement motherboards can be purchased online for a fraction of the cost of a new laptop. However, replacing the motherboard yourself is a risky procedure if you don't know what you're doing. You must completely dismantle your laptop, and disconnect all hardware from the motherboard.
Instructions
1. Power down your laptop. Disconnect the power cable, and then disconnect all external devices from the laptop. Close the display panel, and then place the laptop face down on a flat work surface. Rotate the computer so the front is facing toward you. Remove the battery pack from its compartment. Laptop batteries are usually held in place by one or two release buttons.
2. Remove all plastic, hardware compartment covers from the bottom side of the laptop. Each cover is secured in place by one or two Phillips-head screws. Remove the hardware from each hardware compartment. This usually includes your hard drive, RAM modules, CD/DVD drive, wireless card and modem. Each device is held in place by Phillips-head screws. The only exceptions are the RAM and wireless modules, which are secured by spring-loaded, retaining clips. Remove all remaining screws from the bottom casing, and the laptop's back panel.
3. Place the laptop face up, and open the display panel as far as possible. Pry the plastic keyboard cover from the laptop. The keyboard cover is a thin, plastic strip situated above the keyboard assembly. Remove any screws from behind the top row of keyboard keys. Tilt the keyboard upward, and then place it face down on the laptop's surface. Disconnect the keyboard's ribbon cable, and then remove the keyboard from the laptop.
4. Disconnect all cables extending from each side of the display panel to the motherboard. Remove the Phillips-head screws from each display hinge, as necessary. Lift the display assembly from the laptop's base, and place face up on a flat surface.
5. Remove all screws securing the top cover to the laptop's base. The top cover is the main plastic casing covering the top of the laptop. Disconnect all cables connected to the motherboard from the top casing. These cables are accessible through the small, access holes in the top cover. Remove the top cover from the laptop.
6. Disconnect all cables from the motherboard. Take note of how and where they are connected. Remove all screws securing the motherboard to the laptop's base. Carefully lift the motherboard out of the laptop, and set it aside.
7. Reverse this procedure to install the new motherboard, and reassemble your laptop.
