Double Data Rate Ram (DDR SDRAM) increases the overall performance of your computer when using labor intensive applications.
DDR SDRAM is a technical name used to describe the memory module in a desktop computer. "DDR" means "double data rate" and is supposed to double the speed of previous SDRAM speeds. The DDR SDRAM name also distinguishes this particular memory module from other modules, and informs youwhether it will be compatible in your machine when installed.
Increase System Memory
The most common function of DDR SDRAM is to upgrade the system memory and increase performance. Memory---Random Access Memory---is used by the computer system to create a temporary space to hold storage area for data, which the system draws upon easily and quickly. All applications and programs use memory to function properly. Upgrading the memory of your computer system increases its capacity to run more applications simultaneously without the system crashing or needing to be rebooted. Most users who rely on computer intensive tasks such as video editing, graphic design or music production use DDR SDRAM to operate the programs without trouble.
Increase System Speed
DDR SDRAM is able to operate at faster speeds than older SDRAM as long as your system was designed to take advantage of the newer technology. This means the memory slots in your computer should be manufactured to accommodate the increased speed capacity of the memory module. Memory slots in computers that utilize the increased module speed are rated for "DDR SDRAM" and anything less can use the RAM, but the won't make use of the RAM speed increase. Installing more RAM in your computer will alleviate some of the strain on other components such as the hard drive and increase the overall system performance when using applications or playing games.
Alleviates Stress on Hard Disk
Both PC and Mac operating systems have software built-in that allows hard drives to create "virtual memory," if there is not enough memory installed on the system. The hard drive will spin more often and rapidly causing the hard drive to wear down more quickly and become unresponsive. Installing more DDR SDRAM memory reduces virtual memory use and alleviates some stress on the hard drive. The increased speed of DDR SDRAM acts as supporting hardware to the hard drive and decreases the wear over time on it.
