Pc Modding Cut Case

Cut a window into your computer case to show off your modding skills.

Cutting a window into your computer's case is a basic element of case modding and a great way to add flair to any mod project. If you're going to put a lot of work into customizing the interior of your computer, you want people to be able to see it. A custom window makes your computer unique, and stamps a mod project with your own personality. Cutting the hole for a case window is a simple task, provided that you have a few power tools.

Instructions

1. Draw a full-size template of your window design on a piece of paper. Keep in mind that complicated curves may be more difficult to cut accurately. Use a French curve, a stencil available at any crafts store, to draw help you draw smooth and accurate curves. When you're satisfied with your design, cut it out with an X-Acto knife.

2. Shut down your computer, turn off the power supply and unplug it. Remove the side panel by using a screwdriver to undo the screws around the outside edge of the rear panel. Only remove screws on the outside edge of the rear panel, as interior screws are usually holding the power supply in place.

3. Cover the panel in masking tape to prevent it from being scratched while you're cutting, and label it with which panel it is and its orientation.

4. Lay your design template on the panel in the place you want the window. When positioning the window, keep in mind what parts of the interior you want to make visible, and leave some clearance between the window and the edges of the panel. Trace your template onto the panel.

5. Knock a pilot dent in the point on the outline where you want to start cutting using a hammer and nail. This dent will help guide the drill bit. Using a small drill bit, drill a pilot hole in the dent. Use a larger drill bit to expand the hole so that it's large enough for the jigsaw blade. Drill an additional pilot hole at every point where you will need to make a sharp corner.

6. Set the jigsaw blade in the pilot hole and start cutting, staying inside your design. Use a jigsaw blade that's appropriate for the material your computer case is made from. If you don't know if your jigsaw blades are right for the case material, ask at your local hardware store. Cut slowly and carefully, without putting too much pressure on the blade or twisting it.

7. Remove the panel from the jigsaw, and smooth out any rough edges with a hand file.
