Replace the processor in your IBM Aptiva computer.
IBM Aptiva desktop computers were originally released in 1994. Most Aptiva models were discontinued by May 2001 when they were replaced by the NetVista model. Replacing the processor in your Aptiva computer is a relatively basic procedure. The bad news is Aptiva desktops have limited upgrade options. Most Aptiva computers are compatible with low-grade Intel and AMD processors, which can usually only run a processor as fast as 233 to 933 MHz. Replacing the processor requires some partial disassembly of the desktop's casing.
Instructions
1. Power down the computer using its current operating system. Unplug the power cable, and all external devices from the computer. Touch an unpainted metal surface to ground yourself before dismantling the computer.
2. Rotate the computer so the back panel is facing toward you. Lay the computer horizontally on its left side. Remove the two to three Phillips-head screws fastening the right access panel to desktop's frame. Remove the side panel from the computer to reveal the internal components.
3. Locate the processor cooling fan near the upper right corner of the motherboard. Remove the two to four Phillips-head screws fastening the fan to the motherboard. Disconnect the fan's power cable from the motherboard. Lift the cooling fan out of the computer.
4. Turn the processor's flat-head locking screw in the counterclockwise direction as far as possible. Grasp the side edges of the processor, and lift it out of the computer, and set it aside.
5. Place the new processor inside the socket, while aligning the processor's pins with the pin holes inside the socket. Gently press down on the processor's surface until it is firmly seated inside the socket. Turn the locking screw in the clockwise direction until the processor is locked into place.
6. Apply a thin coat of thermal grease evenly on the processor's surface. Replace the cooling fan, and its retaining screws. Reconnect the fan's power cable to the motherboard.
7. Replace the side access panel, and its retaining Phillips-head screws. Place the computer tower vertically. Reconnect all cables and devices.
