Test A Laptop Motherboard

Test a Laptop Motherboard

If your laptop doesn't seem to turn on, one way to troubleshoot it is to test the motherboard because a faulty motherboard can cause your fan not to work and your monitor to appear blank. However, if you buy a motherboard test card, you can examine your motherboard and find out the exact cause of your computer issue.

Instructions

1. Buy your motherboard test card from a computer store in your area or via the Internet (see Resources).

2. Insert the device in the printer port of your laptop computer.

3. Start your laptop to commence the test automatically. If the motherboard test fails, the computer halts and presents you with a code. Though no progress bar exists, you know the test is done when you see the results pop up on your screen.

4. Contact your computer manufacturer or look in your owner's manual to find out the meaning of the code you just received. Two common codes are 01 (processor test fault), which means you have a bad computer processor; and 1A-22 (memory test fault), which means you have a low amount of system memory.
