Intel originally launched its Q6700 quad-core processor in 2007. The processor has a clock speed of 2.66GHz and a FSB speed of 1066MHz. The processor will work with any version of the Windows operating system, but it has some features that can only be exploited with certain systems.
64-Bit Architecture
The Q6700 is designed with a 64-bit architecture, allowing it to perform certain instructions more efficiently than a standard processor. To exploit this feature, you must install a 64-bit version of Windows and use 64-bit software.
Virtualization Support
The Q6700 features Intel's VT-x virtualization technology. Windows uses this technology to allow you to create and work in an alternate Windows environment (such as Windows XP) while logged into a computer running Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate. This allows for increased compatibility with older computer software or hardware.
Multi-Core
The Q6700's quad-core architecture allows it to perform up to four computing tasks simultaneously, greatly enhancing your multitasking ability. To take advantage of this functionality, you need to run Windows XP or later. Windows 2000 only includes support for up to two cores.
