Overclock your ASUS P5K motherboard for a free performance boost.
Tweaking is the process of increasing default clock frequencies of devices, such as motherboards, memory and video cards, for a free performance boost. Advancements in computer cooling technology have made tweaking a popular method of boosting computer performance speeds without costly upgrades. To tweak your ASUS P5K motherboard safely, a thorough understanding of your computer's components, and patience, are essential. Tweaking can be a dangerous procedure that could cause irreversible heat damage to your computer's internal components. Attempt this procedure only if you have previous experience with tweaking and feel comfortable doing so.
Instructions
1. Restart your computer and press "Delete" during start up to access the BIOS advanced configuration menu. Navigate, using the arrow keys, to "Ai Tweaker," which is located on the upper section of the BIOS welcome screen. Press "Enter" to access the tweaking options.
2. Navigate to the "FSB Strap to North Bridge," press "Enter" and increase the value to the next available option, for example, from 200Mhz to 266Mhz. Press "Enter" to confirm your adjustment.
3. Navigate to "FSB Frequency," press "Enter" and increase the value by increments of 10Mhz, for example, from 200Mhz to 210Mhz. Navigate to "CAS# Latency" and tweak it from four DRAM Clocks to five DRAM Clocks. Navigate to "RAS# Precharge" and adjust it from four DRAM Clocks to five DRAM Clocks. Navigate to "RAS# Active Time" and tweak it from 13 DRAM Clocks to 15 DRAM Clocks.
4. Navigate to "CPU Voltage" and increase the value from 1.2750 to 1.2875, in other words, increase the value by the smallest increment possible. Navigate to "DRAM Voltage" and increase the value by the smallest increment possible. Navigate to the "Exit" menu at the top of the screen and select the "Save and Exit" option to restart your computer and implement your custom tweaks.
5. Download and install Prime 95, a free overclocking testing tool. Close all programs that may be running in the background of your computer and open Prime 95. Run the "Torture Test" for 30 minutes. If no errors appear, restart your computer and enter the BIOS menu. Tweak the "FSB Frequency" and "CPU Voltage" by the smallest increment recommended in the steps above. Save these options and then restart your computer. Run Prime 95 and initiate the "Torture Test" again. Repeat this process until you find the optimum performance boost for your computer. If an error does pop up or your computer freezes, restart the computer, enter BIOS and lower the values you tweaked to the last point of stability.
