What Processors Are Best For Desktops

A good processor can mean the difference between being stuck in traffic or being in the fast lane of the information highway. Processors, also called Central Processing Unit (CPU), are the brains of every computer and control a large part of the speed. Generally, the best desktop processors are made by Intel. Technology, however, is constantly moving forward, changing and adapting. What is the best processor in 2010 will not be the best available in 2015.

Intel Core i7

In 2010, Intel Core i7 is one of the best processors on the market. It has a 64-bit processor with either two, four or six cores for optimal performance. Both Intel Turbo Boost and Intel Hyper-Threading makes each computer a swift, multi-tasking workhorse. Turbo Boost increases processing speed. Hyper-Threading gives the user the ability to use different cores for separate tasks utilizing four to eight threads of communication. This technology, however, will be limited by other factors such as processor speed and memory quantity. For the best performance of any processor, choose a processor with at least 3.0 Ghz processing speed and as many gigabytes of memory as possible. Intel Core i7 is the third generation of Intel Core i processors.

AMD Phenom II X

The AMD Phenom II X6 has Multi-core, Hyper Transport 3.0, AMD PowerNow, and Enhanced Virus Protection technology. Multi-core is similar to Intel's duo and quad core technology with more than one core unit to increase speed and function. HyperTransport 3.0 reduces the energy necessary for the computer function, making it Energy Star compliant. AMD PowerNow keeps the sound generated to a low hum, which makes it quieter than other processors. Enhanced Virus Protection prevents viruses from infecting other computers and protects the computer from specific viruses. AMD Phenom II X6 is the fourth generation of Phenom II X processors and the part of the second generation of Phenom processors.

Intel Core 2 Quad

Intel Core 2 Quad features the multi-core technology and the capacity to have up to 12GB of memory. This processor includes power saving technology, more organized cache subsystem and speed-improving features.
