Keeping your Dell Optiplex GX1 BIOS up-to-date is an important part of your computer's maintenance. The BIOS is responsible for the communications between your computer and various hardware devices. The BIOS allows your computer to recognize and start your operating system. As hardware and operating systems change, your BIOS will need to be updated. Dell offers updates based on your model or serial number. Downloading your BIOS straight from Dell will ensure you get the correct version with no guess work or virus risks.
Instructions
1. Visit the Dell BIOS download website, listed in the Resources section. Choose your operating system and driver language. Select "BIOS" from the "Category" drop down box. Click "Download Now" to download your update file.
2. Double-click the BIOS update file. The file name will vary depending on the version. Click "Setup."
3. Insert a formatted floppy disk into your 3.5-inch floppy drive and press "Enter" to begin creating the BIOS update floppy disk.
4. Exit the DOS screen once the setup is complete. Some versions may exit automatically upon completion.
5. Reboot your Dell Optiplex GX1 system by going to "Start -- Turn Off Computer -- Restart." Leave the floppy disk in the disk drive.
6. If your system is set to boot automatically from a floppy disk, you will see the BIOS update program begin to run before your operating system begins to load. The process only takes a few minutes at the most.
If your system isn't set to boot from a floppy disk first, press F12 before your operating system begins to load. Choose "Floppy Disk" from the list of boot options to boot from your floppy disk.
