The chipset of a motherboard often sits between the CPU and peripheral bus.
When someone tells you to update your motherboard, he often means that you must update the chipset on the computer. Dell Inspiron's chipset contains the basic chip work on the motherboard, including the CPU controller, the memory controller and graphics adapter. If you do not update the chipset, you might experience issues running certain programs due to bugs on the original driver software.
