Almost any effect is possible with the right video editing software.
Video is one of the best ways to communicate with others. In the right hands it immerses viewers in the videographer's perspective. Hollywood proves this every day by helping movie-goers escape reality a few hours at a time. One of the ways they do this is with special effects that enhance footage and increase realism. You can get similar results in Movie Maker 2 in the Windows suite of software by choosing the right effects when you edit your video.
Enhancing Frames
A common problem with video footage is that it's too bright or too dark. This happens because lighting isn't always ideal and sometimes you have to shoot into the sun or a dark room to capture an event. You can adjust the lighting of your clip by applying Movie Maker's brightness effect up to six times. Every time you apply Movie Maker's increase or decrease brightness effect your clip gets brighter or darker but its background noise increases as well. A contrast effect can reduce this background noise and preserve brightness but you need Pixelan's Movie Maker plugins to do it (see Resources).
Color Effects
The tint of a video can change the perception of viewers who watch it. That's why DeBeers uses black and white to communicate class in their diamond commercials. Movie Maker has a grayscale filter that gives videos a classy look and a sepia effect to make them look aged and nostalgic. It also has a hue filter that strips the color from clips and cycles them through a rainbow of colors. This filter is perfect for spicing up dance videos and increasing the emotional impact of scary scenes.
Rotating Clips
Movie Maker has a rotate 90 effect for videos that are tilted left and a rotate 270 effect for videos that are tilted right. You can apply these effects to flip your videos right side up where you tilted them left or right to get more of the action. You can also rotate photos in the same way if you took them with your camera turned sideways to get more in the frame. When you rotate your video or photo be aware that Movie Maker will add black bars to the sides if they're needed to preserve the aspect ratio (ratio of width to height).
Motion Effects
Slapstick comedy and action films use slow and fast motion effects to make sequences more dramatic. Movie Maker can do the same thing with its "Slow Down, Half" and Speed Up, Double" effects. You can use them to speed up road trip footage to make scenery fly by, to slow down a punch to maximize its impact or to add emphasis to other sequences in your video.
