Why Is It Important To Remove A Laptop Battery

Removing a laptop battery is important to good battery care and safety.

Laptop care includes battery care, which is easy to forget about until the battery suddenly dies one day. Sometimes the battery must be removed. Safety concerns and resetting a laptop that will not boot are also reasons to remove a laptop battery.

Electric Shock Hazard

When working on a laptop's hardware, whether adding a memory module or changing a broken keyboard, remove the laptop battery. Even when the laptop is not plugged in, the battery is still sending a charge that can shock you.

Extended Periods of Non-Use

When you are not going to use a laptop for an extended period of time, the battery needs to be removed and stored separately. Do not remove and store a battery that is either completely charged or has no charge at all. The best charge amount is about 50 percent.

Resetting a Laptop with Boot Issues

Some laptops that only boot up to a blank, black screen require that the battery be removed to perform a hard reset. The method of this reset differs between various brands and models, but in general, you remove all power sources for a certain amount of time and then replace the battery before holding down the power button.
