A computer motherboard
A motherboard is a central computer part that integrates all other hardware. In particular, the motherboard has special sockets to install a processor (CPU), random access memory (RAM) modules and expansion cards, such as a video card. If you plan on upgrading your computer's hardware--adding more RAM, for example--it is important to determine the computer's motherboard information since each model supports only a certain type of CPU and memory. In Windows you use a special system program that provides comprehensive computer information, including the motherboard type.
Instructions
1. Click on the "Start" button to get to the Windows start menu.
2. Click on "Run" in Windows XP; skip this step if you run Windows Vista or 7 on your computer.
3. Type "msinfo32" into the text box on the bottom of the Start menu and press "Enter" on the keyboard. It opens a window called "System Information."
4. Find the motherboard manufacturer and the model given in the column "Value" under "System Manufacturer" and "System Model" in the System Information window. For example, you may read the manufacturer as "ASUSTeK Computer" and the motherboard model as "Rampage Formula."
