Windows Memory Diagnostic is a free utility to test RAM.
Microsoft offers a free utility to diagnose system memory problems and troubleshoot solutions. The Windows Memory Diagnostic utility is an onboard utility in Windows 7, and is downloadable for earlier Windows operating systems.
Bootable Disk
For the downloadable version of Windows Memory Diagnostic (see Resources), the user must create a bootable disk with a floppy disk or CD-R.
USB Drive
Using the UNetbootin utility (see Resources), users can create a bootable USB drive to use in place of the floppy disk or CD-R.
Windows Memory Diagnostic
When the computer is booted up with the bootable disk inserted, Windows Memory Diagnostic will start automatically. The testing may take 30 minutes to an hour. The Diagnostic application can detect corrupt memory or other RAM problems. The application consists of six different tests. The programs will make two passes with each test. This reduces the possibility of the Diagnostic missing memory errors.
Windows 7
In Windows 7, the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool is included. The utility is located in the Control Panel, under Administrative Tools.
