Upgrade An Hp Dv5

Upgrade your HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop.

Upgrading your laptop's hardware is a necessity for many computer owners. It allows you to keep your laptop as up-to-date as possible without completely replacing your laptop. Common hardware upgrades usually include your hard drive and memory. These devices have the greatest impact on your HP laptop's overall performance. Replacing or upgrading any device in your HP Pavilion dv5000-series (DV5) laptop requires that you dismantle it to some degree.

Instructions

Upgrading the Hard Drive

1. Turn off your laptop. Disconnect all cables and devices from the computer. Close the display panel, and place the laptop face down with the front facing toward you. Slide the battery release lever to the left, and then remove the battery from its compartment in the laptop's upper left corner.

2. Remove the hard drive compartment cover, and its two retaining Phillips-head screws from the lower right corner of the laptop. Remove the two Phillips-head screws securing the hard drive in place. Grasp the hard drive, and slide it to the right to disconnect it from the motherboard. Lift the hard drive out of its compartment.

3. Remove the two Phillips-head screws from each side of the hard. These screws secure the metal bracket to the hard drive. Remove the bracket, and then transfer the bracket to your new hard drive.

4. Place the new hard drive in the empty hard drive compartment. Slide the hard drive to the left to connect it to the motherboard connectors. Replace the two Phillips-head screws that secure the drive to the compartment.

5. Replace the hard drive's compartment cover, and its two retaining Phillips-head screws.

Upgrading Memory

6. Remove the memory compartment cover, and its two Phillips-head screws from the center of the laptop's bottom casing.

7. Spread apart the retaining latches on each side of the memory module inside the compartment. Tilt the module upward at a 45-degree angle. Remove the module from the memory slot. Repeat this for each module inside the memory compartment.

8. Align the notches on the new memory module with the notches inside the empty memory slot. Place the new memory module inside the empty memory slot at a 45-degree angle. Press down on the module until the retaining clips snap the module into place.

9. Replace the compartment's cover, and retaining screws. Replace the battery pack, and then place the laptop face up. Reconnect all cables and devices to the appropriate ports on the back panel of the laptop.
