Nvidia Gforce Fx Graphics Card Identification

Geforce 5200 FX

The Nvidia Geforce FX series of graphics cards--also known as GeForce Series 5--debuted in 2003. These cards were the first to utilize Shader Model 2 with DirectX 9. Shader Model 2, a pixel-rendering technology, allows for lighting effects and detailed color manipulation. Identifying an FX-series card is a simple procedure that can be performed before or after physical installation of the card.

Pre-installation identification

Most FX-series graphics cards are labeled prominently with the FX designation and their family number on one side of the card. If there is no prominent identification for the graphics card, as is the case with some manufacturers, the user must take note of the model number, displayed on every graphics card's printed circuit board, and refer to the manufacturer's model listings to identify the card.

Using system information

If your card is already installed in your computer, you can identify it through Windows. The quickest method is to right-click on the Desktop and select "Display Settings" or "Personalize," depending on which version of Windows you are running. If you select "Personalize," "Display Settings" appears in the next dialog box. A dialog box will tell you what graphics card your monitor attached to. The listing will include the manufacturer's name, FX family designation and family series number. If you click "Advanced Settings," you will get a dialog box with more detailed information on the Adapter tab.

Using Nvidia Control Panel

The Nvidia device driver, known as the Nvidia unified driver, installs a program called Nvidia Control Panel. This application will list all the specifications of your installed graphics card. To launch the Nvidia Control Panel right-click a section of the Windows Desktop and select "Nvidia Control Panel" from the resulting context box. Once the program opens, click "View System Information." This will display detailed information about your graphics card in the right pane of the window. Information will include the name of the Nvidia family, the family number and specific memory and GPU clock information.
