Expansion cards
can add functionality to a computer.
Computers function via the interaction, or communication, of many devices. One such integral device is the motherboard, or primary circuit board of the computer. PC users can add expansion cards to their motherboards for a number of reasons.
Definition
An expansion card, also called an expansion board, interface card or adapter, is a printed circuit board that plugs into expansion slots located on the motherboard.
Process
Expansion cards house edge connectors, which are traces that lead from the end of the card and function as connection points. The edge connectors plug into the motherboard's expansion slot. This establishes circuit contact between the motherboard and the card, allowing the motherboard to read the digital information stored on the card's microchip.
Function
Expansion cards enable peripherals, or hardware devices such as video cards and graphics cards, to be attached for added computer functionality. Expansion cards allow PC users to tailor their computer devices to fit their individual needs. Expansion cards also allow PC users to upgrade their computer's capabilities, thereby avoiding the need to constantly purchase new computer systems due to obsolescence.
