Upgrade A Laptop

Because of their smaller size, laptops are not as easy to upgrade as desktop or tower PCs. Nevertheless, there are some easy hardware and software upgrades that you can do to get a little more power and speed from your laptop. Upgrading your laptop is far more cost effective than purchasing a new machine and can give you the same boosts in performance.

Instructions

1. Upgrade your Random Access Memory (RAM). One of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to get more speed from your machine is to upgrade the RAM. RAM helps your computer run multiple programs and process graphics and video. If you have a dual processor drive, you will also have a significant speed boost when you have two units of RAM. Most laptops, such as the Macbook, allow you to access the RAM through a panel in the bottom.

2. Upgrade your hard drive. Your hard drive space is a different kind of memory than RAM. Your hard drive is where your files are stored. A bigger hard drive means you can store more data. Hard drives are relatively easy to swapl. You can also purchase an external hard drive that connects via USB or FireWire. Hard drives also have rated speeds -- a hard drive with faster RPM will read and write more quickly.

3. Upgrade your operating system. If you are running an older version of Windows or OSX, you can get more features and increased productivity by upgrading your operating system. Note though that later versions of operating systems may demand more resources, and therefore, may make your computer actually run more slowly.

4. Get a new optical drive. Depending on your model, this can be difficult. But if you have a CD drive, you may want to upgrade to a CD/DVD burner.
