What Is The Symbol For Motherboard

There's no specific symbol for a computer motherboard.

A computer motherboard contains major components but does not have a specific symbol on a computer diagram or drawing. Most developers use a rectangle to show the motherboard but include different information depending on the purpose of the drawing. Types of drawings include block, schematic and general equipment location diagrams, along with combined information drawings.

Block Diagram

In a block diagram of a computer, a motherboard may appear as a rectangle with lines showing major connections from other components in the computer. In this case, the rectangle would include information such as the motherboard's part number. A block diagram of a motherboard shows its outline as a rectangle with smaller rectangles inside to show the major components on the board itself. It shows major signal flow but may not show correct dimensions, specific locations of components or exact connection points.

Schematic Diagram Drawings

Typically, a schematic diagram of a computer shows the motherboard as a rectangle and includes all electrical connections to it from other components. A schematic diagram of a motherboard shows many of its components as rectangles but also uses electronic symbols for specific components such as resistors, capacitors and transistors. Computer chips appear as rectangles and include all connections. Many schematic diagrams use reference designations for the components that you compare to a chart for details, while others include exact information within the component's outline. Manufacturers may vary the amount of detail on schematic diagrams.

Equipment Location

An equipment location diagram of a computer may illustrate the motherboard with an outline of its actual shape. An equipment location diagram of the motherboard itself adds outlines of its components in their actual shapes and in scale to their locations in relation to other components. Such drawings may include detailed information for each component or add specific drawings for more complex components. A motherboard may also have additional, smaller circuit boards attached called daughter boards, which may have their own detailed drawings.

Combination Drawings

Manufacturers are not limited in the amount of information or the way they present it on block, schematic or equipment location diagrams. They sometimes include characteristics of each type on diagram in a single drawing. In some cases, manufacturers put only general information on drawings directed to the user and put more details on those for technicians. Some use photographs or high-quality graphic images to show exact details of a motherboard or the components on it.
