The CPU installed inside your computer connects to a specific type of port, such as socket 754 or socket 939. An AMD processor that connects to the socket 754 port is compatible only with that specific type of socket. Over time, your original AMD CPU won't be able to process cutting-edge software without a noticeable loss in speed. If you ever want to upgrade to a new socket 754--compatible processor, you first need to unlock the AMD CPU from the socket and remove it.
Instructions
1. Shut down your computer's operating system, and wait five minutes so the AMD processor and its attached heat sink have time to cool down. Unplug the monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer and power cables from the back of the computer.
2. Disconnect any other devices attached to the computer, such as USB cables, and move the case onto its side. Unscrew the two Phillips screws at the left side of the case, and pull the access panel off the case.
3. Find the cooling fan and metal heat sink positioned over the socket 754 processor, which is located in the middle of the motherboard. Unplug the cable connecting the fan to the motherboard.
4. Push down the metal clips on the edges of the cooling fan to unlock it from the heat sink. Lift the fan and the heat sink upward. Set both devices upside down on a flat surface outside the computer.
5. Grab the thin, metal retaining bar located just above the AMD processor. Pull the bar up and to the left to unlock the processor from the socket. Hold the edges of the processor and pull upward to lift it off the socket.
