Identifying a computer's motherboard isn't difficult with the right software.
A computer's motherboard acts as the machine's nervous system, controlling communication between the various components and providing essential services and functions. Identifying which model of motherboard is installed and its specifications is possible via a range of software applications.
Manufacturer's Software
Many motherboard manufacturers bundle a software CD with their devices -- the software on it should tell you which board is being used as well as provide a handful of basic diagnostic tools. If the CD isn't handy, replacement applications can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website.
Third-Party Tools
There are a number of third-party applications that can identify the current motherboard model, and many of them are free. A quick Web search will identify these.
Windows and BIOS Tools
Depending on the motherboard, information may be displayed about it in the BIOS screens that appear when the computer first starts up. You may have to press the F2 or Del key to see these screens (it vares from board to board). A number of tools in Windows, including Device Manager (in Control Panel) and System Information (in System Tools) can provide additional diagnostic information.
