Where Find An Audio Device On A Computer

A sound card has to convert information to a format that speakers will recognize.


Audio devices come in a two basic types. You may have integrated audio, where the computer's audio device is part of the motherboard, or you may have a separate sound card. Knowing the location and type of the audio device can prove useful when you want to install audio components, as well as in troubleshooting situations.

A computer audio device translates digital information into an analog output signal suitable for playback over speakers. An audio device typically takes the form of a sound card.


Location


Look at the back of your computer to find the physical location of your audio device. You'll find your audio device where you find speaker output and microphone input.


Identification


Access the Device Manager through your computer's Control Panel to find details about your computer's audio device. Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" tab to find out which audio device you have installed on your machine.
