Upgrade A Motherboard Without Reinstalling Windows

Everything connects to the motherboard.

A motherboard is the basic piece of hardware in your computer to which everything is connected. Upgrading your motherboard to a new one can make your computer faster and provide for more and faster connections to other pieces of hardware. Although replacing a motherboard is a major undertaking, you do not need to reinstall Windows after doing so.

Instructions

1. Find a motherboard that will work with all of your existing hardware. You can find motherboards at computer retailers like NewEgg.com and other online stores, such as Amazon.com. Each motherboard only works with certain processors and a certain kind of memory.

2. Open the computer case by unscrewing the door from the side of the computer. The door is usually screwed into the back of the computer by two or more Phillips screws. Disconnect the power and turn the computer on its side. Disconnect all of the hardware connected to the motherboard, including the power supply.

3. Unscrew the motherboard from the case. Remove the motherboard and install the new motherboard in the computer case by screwing it to the computer case. Remove the processor and RAM from the old motherboard and install it in the new motherboard. Reconnect all of the other hardware to the motherboard.

4. Don't replace anything else other than the motherboard. If Windows sees too many hardware changes, it will determine that you have installed Windows on a new computer and will make you reinstall Windows.

5. Restart the computer and let Windows find any new drivers for the motherboard. Replace other hardware at a later time, but if too much is changed, even over time, you may be required to reinstall Windows.
