Intel and AMD are popular CPU manufacturers.
The Central Processing Unit (CPU) of your computer processes nearly all of the data required to run your computer. Located on the motherboard, the CPU is considered the brain of the computer as it plays an integral part in the operation of all hardware connected to your computer. Since the CPU is such an integral part of the computing process, its processor speed directly affects the overall speed in which your computer operates. Several freeware programs are available online which can detect the speed of your computer's CPU.
Instructions
CPUInfo
1. Navigate to the CPUInfo download page in your web browser (see Resources). CPUInfo is an easy-to-use application. In addition to testing the speed of your CPU, the application tests and reports the speed of your computer's memory and reports your Level 1, 2 and 3 cache settings.
2. Download the CPUInfo software, saving it to an easy-to-find location, such as the Desktop. The software doesn't need to be installed.
3. Double-click the CPUInfo icon to launch the application. Once the application is launched, the speed of your processor will be displayed prominently in the software window.
