Replacing A Motherboard In An Hp Pavilion Dv5000

Replacing a Motherboard in an HP Pavilion Dv5000

The motherboard is the backbone of any laptop system as it is the component that all other parts must connect to in order to operate. The motherboard in your HP Pavilion Dv5000 laptop may need to be replaced if several of the different components cease to work at the same time or if the machine will not power on at all. Replacing the motherboard is the most challenging and time consuming process you can attempt on a laptop as you must first disassemble almost every other piece.

Instructions

1. Purchase a replacement motherboard sized to fit inside an HP Pavilion Dv5000 laptop (see link in Resources). Power off the Pavilion laptop completely and then close the LCD screen lid. Flip the entire unit over so you can see the bottom side of the case.

2. Hold down the battery-release button and then slide the battery out of the HP laptop. Use a screwdriver to remove all the screws along the edges and at the center of the case to unlock the plastic covers over the hard drive, RAM and CD drive.

3. Lift the plastic covers off the RAM and hard drive. Pull the hard drive up and directly off the motherboard. Grab both sides of the first RAM module and pull it off the motherboard at a 30-degree angle. Repeat the process with the second RAM module. Locate the wireless card just below where the RAM was positioned.

4. Disconnect the two cables running from the wireless card to the motherboard. Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the card down. Lift the card up and remove it from the motherboard.

Pull the CD drive on the left side of the case directly out of the laptop and set it aside. Flip the HP laptop back over and open the LCD screen lid.

5. Insert a thin flat object, such as the edge of a flathead screwdriver, underneath the plastic bezel located between the keyboard and the LCD screen. Pop the bezel upward slightly and disconnect the cable running to the motherboard. Remove the bezel entirely and set it aside.

6. Grab the edge of the keyboard and pull it up toward you. Disconnect the cable running from the keyboard to the motherboard and then set the keyboard aside. Remove the screws holding the plastic screen hinges to the LCD screen. Pull the hinges out of the case.

Pull out the screws holding the heat sink to the processor. Remove the heat sink and then pull the processor straight up and off the motherboard. Pull out the remaining screws holding the motherboard to the case.

7. Take the motherboard out of the laptop and then set the new motherboard down into the case. Place the processor onto the socket on the new motherboard and then attach the heat sink. Put the screen hinges back into place and then re-connect the cables for the keyboard and bezel. Set the bezel and keyboard back onto the laptop.

8. Turn the laptop over and re-assemble the remaining parts. Put the battery back in. Flip the laptop back over and open the lid. Press the power button and wait for the operating system to load to ensure the motherboard was installed correctly.
