My Computer Won'T Recognize My New Hard Drive

Your computer doesn't recognize the new hard drive.

Perhaps you've upgraded your hard drive to fit more and more data on your computer, which previously was not possible. However, one of the common issues with a new hard drive is that your computer might not recognize it. This is a crucial problem, because your computer can't do anything without a functioning hard disk.

Instructions

1. Make sure all the cables are connected properly. Locate the power supply cable (thin black cord) and make sure it is connected. Also, make sure the SATA cable connects your new hard drive to the motherboard. If you are unsure about cable connections, consult the hard drive installation guide.

2. Reboot your computer. Press and hold "F1" key during the start-up process. This will take you to the BIOS mode. Use the arrow keys within "System Setup" menu to "auto-detect" your new drive. Follow the prompts to save the settings and exit the setup. Your computer will reboot and should recognize the new hard drive. If this doesn't work, go to the next step.

3. Update drivers for your new hard disk. Click on Start and select "Run ..." Type without the quotes "devmgmt.msc" and press "Enter." This will launch "Device Manager." Locate the entry for your new hard disk under "Disk Drives." Right-click on it and select "Update Driver Software ..." Follow the prompts to finish the update. Restart your computer.
