Update Motherboard Drivers

Update your motherboard drivers to avoid hardware malfunction.

The motherboard is the main board of the computer, where the most important internal parts are attached. These include the video card, processor, memory chips, hard disk, sound card and LAN card. All of these important components have drivers that are needed for them to communicate with the computer. Without drivers, these hardware parts will fail to function. From time to time, drivers need to be updated to avoid malfunction.

Instructions

Updating the Drivers Via the Manufacturer's Website

1. Find out the brand, model and version of your computer's motherboard. Check all the documentation that came with your computer. If you happen to have lost the documentation, use a program that will help determine it for you, since Windows does not have a tool that does this (see Resources).

2. Open a web browser and visit the manufacturer's website. Navigate to the download page and search for the latest drivers available for your motherboard. Make sure that you type the correct model and version of the motherboard to avoid downloading incompatible drivers.

3. Download the drivers and wait until download is complete. Run the "Exe" files one by one to start installing updated drivers to your computer. When you are prompted to reboot the computer, do so.

Updating Via the Device Manager

4. Click "Start," and then select "Run." In the box provided, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotes) and then click "Ok." If you are using Windows XP Home Edition, open "Control Panel" and then click "Performance and Maintenance." Select "System," click the "Hardware" tab and then "Device Manager."

5. Browse through the list of hardware devices. If you see a red exclamation point or yellow question mark beside an item listed in "Device Manager," the driver of the device may need to be updated. Right-click on the item, select "Properties," and then click on the "Driver" tab.

6. Click "Update Driver" and follow the instructions of the "Update Driver Wizard" until the update is done. Reboot the computer and see if the exclamation point or question mark disappears. If it doesn't, the driver installed may be corrupted and may need to be reinstalled.
