The Asus K7V is a PC motherboard that supports an AMD Athlon processor, and North Bridge and South Bridge System chipsets. Verbs are what you do, but some verbs do not describe an action. Certain verbs connect one part of a sentence to another. These are helping verbs (verbs that help to clarify a main verb) and linking verbs. Discover the meaning of linking verbs and use them here.


Function


Imagine a chain necklace made up of many links. If you remove just one link, it will no longer be a necklace; it will just be a chain. Now think of a sentence as a necklace. Each part of the sentence can be considered a link that, when put together well, makes one complete sentence. A sentence does not need an action verb to become a complete sentence. A linking verb completes a sentence when an action verb is not used.


Significance


Linking verbs connect the subject to information about the subject. Consider a banana. If I ask you to tell me the the color of a banana, you may respond with, "yellow." The color yellow gives information about the banana. Now if I ask you to respond to the same question in a complete sentence, you would probably say,


"A banana is yellow." The linking verb "is" remains vital to this sentence, because without the verb, the sentence would be incomplete:


"A banana yellow."


Types


Certain verbs are always linking verbs. These are:


Forms of TO BE: (am, is, are, was, were, have been, has been, is being, was being)


Forms of TO BECOME: (become, becomes, became, has become, had become)


Forms of TO SEEM: (seem, seemed, seems, is seeming, are seeming, had seemed)


Some verbs can be either action or linking verbs, such as look, smell, taste, sound, feel, remain, prove, grow and appear.


Identification


It is so easy to recognize when a verb is action or linking. First, ask yourself if the subject could really do what the verb suggests. Consider this sentence: "The car smells new." Simply ask yourself if the subject of the sentence (car) can actually "smell." It cannot perform the action of smelling.


Of course, this test can be confusing. If the subject actually can perform the suggested action of the verb, then you must determine the true intention of the sentence. "That man smells funny." This is an example of one of those confusing sentences, because a man can perform the action of smelling, but the true purpose of this sentence is to link "that man" to more information about him. In this case, it is how he smells.


Considerations


The most vivid writing possesses fewer linking verbs and more action verbs. Linking verbs simply tell readers about a person, place, thing or idea. Action verbs show readers what a subject does, therefore, the sentences are vivid and descriptive, painting a picture in the reader's mind.

If you find yourself in the market for a new hard drive, you have two options as of the date of publication: There are plenty of traditional magnetic platter hard drives available, ranging in size up to multiple terabytes of data storage. There are also new forms of storage media called solid-state drives (SSDs), consisting of large blocks of non-volatile memory. Each type of drive offers certain advantages over the other, and which you choose will depend on your goals for the device as well as your budget.


Speed


Traditional hard drives must spin up before you can access any data on the platters, which is one of the reasons a computer takes several minutes to boot up when you first turn it on. Once a drive is active, data transfer is rapid -- although if left unused for several minutes, power-saving options will shut down the drive, requiring another spin-up cycle for use. Solid-state drives function more like RAM or flash drives, allowing instant access to programs. Capacity


The price of non-volatile memory also limits the size of solid-state drives. Magnetic drives have long since broken the terabyte barrier, and multi-terabyte drives are common options for computer builders. Most SSDs on the market are much smaller in capacity, and beyond 128GB, prices tend to spike upwards. Again, the development of the technology will increase these limits, but the day you can purchase a terabyte of non-volatile memory for a reasonable price may be far in the future.


Bottom Line


The speed advantage of a solid-state drive is certainly obvious to any observer, but the cost is a turn-off for most. You can always compromise, buying a small SSD to run your operating system and any games you commonly play while relying on traditional drives for volume storage. That way, you can get all the advantages of solid-state memory's speed for your important programs without breaking the bank.

Home Theater Personal Computers (HTPC) sit in the living room's entertainment center. Often, they are placed next to the TV or on a stand shelf with little space. These computers replace DVD players, DVRs and even CD players. For this reason, take into consideration what case type and other hardware are required to build the best HTPC for your needs.


HTPC Case


Although a computer tower works as well as a slim, set-top style case in theory, it will not look as nice. The computer will likely be louder, too. Small HTPC cases are designed to consume less power and, as a result, make less noise. Many also come with a remote; premium cases come with touchscreens. Choose a case that comes with its own power supply to avoid headaches, because putting a full power supply into a tiny case is a challenge.


Motherboard and Processor


An HTPC computer typically uses either a mini ATX or a mini ITX motherboard. Mini ATX boards come closest to a regular computer's standard, with the exception that they offer fewer expansion slots and memory bays. Both boards come in either Intel- or AMD-compatible sockets for your processor. All but the tiniest HTPCs use the same processors found in larger desktops. Buy a single-core Atom only if the board you choose requires one; otherwise, use a dual-core processor.


RAM


An HTPC computer will likely run Windows Vista or Windows 7 editions bundled with Windows Media Center. You must install at least 2GB of RAM into your HTPC, but 4GB is better. Both of these Windows versions require a minimum of 1GB, but Windows uses most of that amount, leaving little memory for playing media.


Drives


To run your HTPC as a digital video recorder (DVR), you need a lot of disk space. If you network the HTPC to a storage device, hard drive size is not an issue. For storage directly on your HTPC, however, go with at least a 500GB hard drive. You also need an optical drive to play movies and games on the computer. A DVD player will do, but for Blu-Ray fans, get a Blu-Ray and DVD combo drive.


TV Tuner


A TV tuner is a must-have for any HTPC. Without one, a computer cannot receive TV channels. The two big types of TV tuners on the market are internal cards and USB "stick" adapters. Internal cards are available for either PCI or PCI-E slots. A PCI-E card fits into a PCI slot, but the reverse is not true. All a USB stick adapter needs is an available USB port on your computer. Both tuner types add at least one coaxial port for connecting a cable between your computer and your TV signal's source.


Graphics Card


Not every HTPC needs a graphics card. Most motherboards come with on-board graphics and, inside a tiny HTPC case, there is not always room for both a TV tuner and a graphics card. You do need at least 256MB of graphics memory for good play and 512MB is recommended. If you do buy a graphics card, try to find a low-profile model that needs only one slot.

A Noisy Fan


One common problem with Sony Vaio laptops (and laptops in general) is the fan becoming incredibly noisy. This is almost always caused by your fan clogging up with dust and being unable to spin properly. Take a can of spray air designed for use with computers and blow out the vents on the back of your machine. This will clear up a good majority of the dust and allow the fan to spin quietly, which will not only keep the noise down but will also prevent the bottom of the laptop from becoming incredibly hot, too.


Charging Problems


Laptop batteries have known to become finicky over time. If, when plugged in, the display on your computer decreases in size and you are told it is plugged in but is no longer charging, this is because one of the cells in the battery has been erased. This can be due to the cell's dying from old age, or from having the battery plugged in while the laptop is also plugged into an AC power adapter. At this point, unfortunately, the only fix is to replace the battery.


Keyboard Volume Control


If the hotkey that controls the volume of your speakers stops working, this is due to outdated drivers for the device. You can find drivers for your hotkeys (as well as other devices like your sound card or video card) at the Sony Vaio website (see link in Resources). Check for new drivers at least once a month to avoid any functionality or compatibility issues that may crop up with your computer.

What Is Fancystart Daemon On An Asus

Many computer manufacturers include additional proprietary software on the laptops and desktop computers they produce. These software titles are intended to provide a greater value for consumers, though not all of the programs are well documented. One such software title is the "FancyStart Daemon" program that ASUS includes on its laptop computers.


FancyStart Daemon


FancyStart Daemon allows users to change the startup image that appears before Windows loads. This provides users with a way to customize their Windows experience without the need for additional third-party software or the technical knowledge that would be required to change the startup image manually. Users can select their own images or choose an image that ASUS supplied with the program, such as the default "ASUS" startup image that is already installed on the computer.


Using FancyStart Daemon


Launch the FancyStart Daemon from a shortcut in the "All Programs" section of the Windows Start menu. Once open, the program shows a preview of the currently installed start-up image and gives users the option to browse for other images to create an alternate start-up screen. When an image is selected, FancyStart Daemon automatically makes any resolution changes necessary to generate a start-up screen and changes the current screen to the one that the user has just created.


Removing the Program


If a user doesn't plan on using FancyStart Daemon he can uninstall it to free up a small amount of space on his hard drive. The standard Windows software removal interface can be used to uninstall the program; this option is found by opening the Control Panel from the Windows Start menu and clicking the "Uninstall a Program" link under the Programs heading in the Control Panel window. It may take a moment for FancyStart Daemon to appear in the program list; once it displays, click it and choose the "Uninstall" option near the top of the window.


Reinstalling the Program


If you have previously uninstalled FancyStart Daemon, it is possible to re-install the program using the restoration CDs or recovery partition that came with your ASUS computer. All ASUS software is located on a labeled CD or folder within the recovery partition; by launching the setup program for the ASUS software you will be given the option to change, install or remove ASUS components. Select FancyStart Daemon from the list of ASUS components within the program to begin the re-installation of the software.

4. Click "Browse" to specify the ATI Radeon driver's installation path. Once a path is assigned, the setup wizard will inspect your system's configuration and install the drivers. Click "Finish" when setup completes to exit the installation wizard.


Using Automatic Driver Detection


5. Go to the "Start" menu and launch the control panel. Click "System and Security" followed by "Device Manager" from the "System" field.


6. Expand the "Display Adapters" section from the list of available hardware devices. Double-click your ATI Radeon video card, go to the "Driver" tab and press "Update Driver."


7. Click "Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software." This option searches both your computer and the Internet for potential driver updates. If any are found, Windows will install them for you. Click "Close" once the installation finishes and restart your computer for your new video card drivers to take effect.


Using Manual Driver Detection


8. Go to the "Start" menu and launch the control panel. Click "System and Security" followed by "Device Manager" from the "System" field.


9. Expand the "Display Adapters" section from the list of available hardware devices. Double-click your ATI Radeon video card, go to the "Driver" tab and press "Update Driver."


10. Click "Browse My Computer for Driver Software" to locate your ATI drivers manually within your local hard drive.


11. Click "Browse," select the folder where your ATI Radeon drivers reside, then press "OK."


12. Click "Next" to have Windows update the device driver. Once finished, click "Close" and restart your computer.

Benchmarks can also be the comparison of the current numbers with the past year's results.


Sales Metrics


Many sales plans have outlined strategies that include specific activities believed to generate more revenue, such as phone calls, sales visits, emails, letters and others. Sales metrics is simply the measurement of the set activity goals. When managers and salespeople track these numbers, they can see how much activity is needed to reach the desired goal. An example is, "It takes three phone calls to get an order from Customer X."

Released in October 2008, the Intel DX58SO is a desktop personal computer motherboard from semiconductor company Intel Corp. Turn On A Computer Without A Power Switch

Use the keyboard to power on your desktop computer.


Unless your computer is located within arm's reach, gaining access to the power button on the machine might not always be easy. In fact, if the computer is under a desk or table, shutting down or turning on the machine might actually be somewhat of a chore. However, there is a simple solution to the problem.


Most modern computers support powering on the computer with a PS/2 keyboard. Even when the power to a computer is off, there remains a small amount of electrical current in some of the circuits on the motherboard. For computers with an ACPI compliant BIOS (most are), a PS/2 keyboard can be used to power on the computer by simply pressing a key.


Instructions


1. Shutdown the computer. Turn the computer back on and press the "Delete" or "F2" key as soon as you see the initial boot screen. The BIOS menu screen appears.


2. Enter the BIOS password if prompted to do so. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate to the "Advanced" or "Advanced Settings" menu option. Press the "Enter" key.


3. Move the cursor to the "Power Management" or "ACPI Management" option. Press the "Enter" key and then move the cursor to the "Wake on Keyboard" or "Power on by Keyboard" option.


4. Press the "+" or "-" key to change the "Wake on Keyboard" or "Power on by Keyboard" option value setting to "Enabled."


5. Press the "F10" key to save the BIOS setting changes and exit the utility. The computer will restart.


6. Press the power button on the computer and hold it for four or five seconds. The computer powers off.


7. Press any key on the keyboard. The computer should start without the need to push the power button.

What Is The Difference Between Sae & Metric Sockets

Sockets


While the majority of bolt-type fasteners used in the United States conform to one or the other measurement scale, the difference between SAE and metric fasteners (and their corresponding sockets) is as profound as the difference between yards and meters: They are almost the same, but not quite. Each represents a different standard that may or may not have a (nearly) matching size in the other. Does this Spark an idea?


What is SAE?


The origin of the SAE standard comes from the English, or Imperial, system, which is based on inches and the fractions thereof. SAE, which stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers, was used as the standard primarily on U.S.-made cars and trucks through the 1970s. SAE sockets are sized in inches and fractions of inches.


Metric Measurements


Hex-head bolt


Metric is the preferred fastener measurement throughout the world. More exact than fractions of an inch, metric measurements--based on millimeters--are a precise representation of the diameter of the head of the fastener. Imported cars have used metric bolts for more than 30 years.


Six Sides


Both SAE and metric fasteners have six-sided (hex) heads that are turned using open-end, boxed or socket wrenches. Socket wrenches maintain constant contact with all sides of the bolt head and feature a ratchet system for easier and faster operation in either direction.


One For The Other . . . Sometimes


While there is no precise correlation between SAE fractional and metric measurements, there are many sockets that are close enough in size to be used interchangeably, in some circumstances. For example, 5/16 and 8 mm, 7/16 and 11 mm, 5/8 and 16 mm, 3/4 and 19 mm, 7/8 and 22 mm, and 15/16 and 24 mm.


Pick Both


While car and truck maintenance seems to lead the way on the transition from SAE to metric measurement standards for fasteners, and therefore the sockets used to tighten and loosen them, these same standards are used on virtually all bolt fasteners commonly distributed throughout the world. Many reasonably priced socket wrench sets have both SAE and metric sockets that will cover most repair bases.

Update The Bios On An Acer Netbook

The BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is software built into a computer that loads and starts the operating system. BIOS updates can upgrade the software, improve compatibility and remove bugs. With an Acer Netbook, you can update the BIOS through the Acer "Service and Support" site. Additionally, BIOS updates can improve interoperability with any Acer peripherals that you have added to the netbook.


Instructions


1. Go to the Acer "Service and Support" site.


2. Click on the "Service and Support" link on the top-left of the page.


3. Locate "Driver Download" and click on the link.


4. Click "Select Product Family" and click "Netbook."


5. Click on the model of the netbook, click "BIOS."


6. Locate the newest BIOS version and click it to begin the download. Click on "Save" to save it to the computer.


7. Right-click the download to unzip it. Click "Extract All..." Locate the file titled "Windows" and click it to open it. Double-click the "EXE" file inside and allow it to fully download. It will then update your current BIOS.

Unlock The Compaq Evo N1000c

The Compaq Evo N1000c is a laptop computer manufactured by Compaq, which is now a division of Hewlett-Packard. The Evo N1000c comes with Windows XP pre-installed. Windows XP has a lock feature for preventing unauthorized access to your computer while you are away from the machine. This is useful if you work in an open environment where you cannot always control who has access to your computer. You can unlock Windows XP by simply entering your login credentials. Configuring this feature on your Compaq Evo N1000c laptop is easy and will require approximately two minutes.


Instructions

1. Press and hold the Windows logo key on your keyboard and press the "L" key. The unlock screen will open.


2. Enter your login details into the "Username" and "Password" boxes.


3. Click "OK." Windows XP will unlock and return you to the application you were using when the system was locked.

What Are The Main Differences Between Atx And Btx Form Factors

The ATX and the BTX -- acronyms for Advanced Technology eXtended and Balanced Technology eXtended, respectively -- are motherboard form factors that the semiconductor company introduced in 1995 and 2003, respectively. Both standards specify the size and design of a motherboard, which acts as the heart of the personal computer since it contains many of its key components. The BTX never caught on as the replacement for the ATX. However, it was designed as an advancement over its predecessor, judging by the differences between the motherboard form factors.


Size


In terms of size, the ATX motherboard form factor has two variants: the regular ATX, which measures 12 inches wide and 9.6 inches deep, or 305 by 244 millimeters; and the smaller version called microATX, which is 9.6 by 9.6 inches, or 244 by 244 mm. The BTX motherboard has three main variants: the original BTX, which is 12.8 by 10.5 inches, or 325 by 266 mm; microBTX, which is 10.4 by 10.5 inches, or 264 by 267 mm; and the picoBTX, which is 10.5 by 8 inches, or about 268 by 203 mm. Regardless of size, the BTX is larger than the ATX.


Processor and System Memory


Each ATX and BTX motherboard has a section for placing a processor, or central processing unit. This component is physically and electrically connected to the motherboard using its CPU socket, and is accompanied by a fan for its cooling system. The CPU is placed at the ATX's upper middle section, while that of the BTX goes at the lower middle section. Also included are dual inline memory module (DIMM) slots: up to four for the ATX, two for the BTX.


Disk Drives


The ATX and the BTX motherboard have connectors for accommodating disk drives: namely hard disk drive for data storage space, optical disc drive for playing discs such as CDs and DVDs, and floppy drive for inserting floppy disks. The ATX provides support for three disk drive connectors and two drive bays. The HTX can provide support for up to two optical disc drives, and a hard drive and floppy drive.


Expansion Ports


The expansion ports on each ATX and BTX motherboard -- which include Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) interfaces and Accelerated Graphics Ports (AGPs) -- serve as slots for enhancing the computer with cards such as discrete video/graphics cards, wireless network cards and sound cards. The ATX and BTX form factor can offer up to seven expansion ports, with the number often depending on size. For instance, the micro versions of the ATX and the BTX have four and the picoBTX has one.


Inputs/Outputs


The inputs/outputs -- usually abbreviated as I/Os -- is a reference to the audio/video and networking connectors that the ATX and BTX motherboard form factors provide. This includes USB ports; headphone and microphone jacks; Ethernet, or RJ-45 jack for wireless networking; PS/2 for connecting the computer keyboard and mouse; and Video Graphics Array (VGA) port for hooking up the computer monitor. The I/O section is placed at the ATX's upper middle section, right next to the processor. The BTX offers front panel I/Os as well, although it adds back-panel ones on the traditional desktop tower.

The HP w2207h is a 22-inch wide-screen flat panel monitor designed and manufactured by Hewlett-Packard. The monitor is equipped with a thin film transistor screen and LCD display. Instructions


1. Unpack the HP w2207h monitor from the original packaging. Ensure the computer is turned off before installing.


2. Lay the monitor flat with the screen side up; rotate the screen to a horizontal position, while holding the base of the monitor and lifting up. Remove the shipping strap located on the base. Lift and lower the base hinge for the desired viewing angle. Place the monitor upright on a level surface near the computer.

5. Plug the power cord into the back of the monitor. Plug the other end into a grounded electrical outlet.


6. Update your computer drivers if necessary. Turn on the computer and allow it to boot. Place the driver CD into the computer CD drive. The driver menu will automatically load. Select the language and click "Next." Click "Install Monitor Driver Software" and follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, restart your computer. The monitor is now installed and ready for use.

Alternate Button


Some laptops have more than one power switch or button. For example, many Sony Vaio computers have a switch on the side and a button at the top of the keyboard marked "P3"; both power up the laptop. Press any key you haven't tried before.


Power Activation


Certain laptops offer a setting that automatically activates them when first plugged in. Unplug the laptop from its outlet, wait a minute, and plug it in again. There's a chance this will power it up, if someone previously activated the above-mentioned setting.


Adapter Problems


The failure of an AC adapter can seem like a switch problem. As the RadioShack website points out, some adapters have a small light that indicates normal operation. Ensure the adapter works before spending money to replace the switch.

What Is An Rj45 Gigabit Lan Port

Newer, faster Ethernet standards are called "Gigabit."


Sockets on computers and network devices are known as "ports." A network port is also called a LAN port --- LAN stands for Local Area Network --- which is an industry term for a private network. The leading set of standards for the physical properties of LANs is called Ethernet. The Ethernet recommendations evolve over time, each new addition creating faster and more efficient networks. The latest series of Ethernet standards covers networks that can transfer data at more than a thousand million bits per second. This is a gigabit LAN. RJ45 is the common name for connecting the network cable to the computer.


RJ45


The RJ45 connector is the most common form of plug/socket design used in networking today. Computers shipped from the manufacturer with a network adapter installed always have an RJ45 port. The name is not completely accurate as it is a code allotted to a type of telephone jack by the US Federal Communication Commission. The "RJ" in RJ45 stands for "Registered Jack" and all telephone connectors approved for use in the United States have an RJ code. The true RJ45 plug has eight pins and two contacts. In Ethernet applications, the plug has eight pins and eight contacts. As the RJ designation refers to the wiring plan and not the design of the plug, the Ethernet plug is not an RJ45. However, it looks exactly like one, and so everyone calls it RJ45.


LAN Port


LAN ports are also known as Ethernet ports, network ports, RJ45 jacks, network socket, or network card. The socket looks similar to a telephone socket, only it is a little wider. Inside the socket eight metal strips at the bottom connect with corresponding strips in the plug. When the plug is inserted into the port it is locked into place by as plastic spring. This holds a connection by keeping the metal strips in the plug and socket in contact. The LAN port connects directly to the computer's network adapter and it is a connection between network adapters over cable that forms a network.


Ethernet


The Ethernet standards have been published as open standards (free to all) since 1983. The controlling authority is the Institute of Electrical and electronics Engineers. All Ethernet standards are published under the code 802.3 followed by one or two letters to indicate a sequence. Each recommendation forms a description of hardware requirements that the 802.3 committee has investigated as the best interconnection of technologies to produce improved network performance. The standards recommend different cable types for each level of performance. The most common form of cable in use today for Ethernet networks is Unshielded Twisted Pair, which is terminated by the RJ45-style connector.


Gigabit Ethernet


The Ethernet recommendations for gigabit networks include four types of cable: twin-axial cable, Unshielded Twisted Pair and single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cable. Of these four types, only Unshielded Twisted Pair uses the RJ45-style plug and could connect to the RJ45 LAN port of a computer.

What Is the Main Circuit Board of a Computer?


The main circuit board of a computer is the motherboard, or main board. All other components and peripheral devices plug into the motherboard. It is a responsible for communicating between the different components and peripheral devices.


Purpose


The motherboard serves as the placeholder for all the electronic components that will be plugged into the computer. It also contains the BIOS, or Basic Input/Output System.


Devices


Many devices plug into the motherboard into order to run. These devices can be the central processing unit, memory, graphics cards, hard drives or sound cards.


Form Factor


The form factor of the motherboard refers to its size. This is standardized so nearly all computers cases can run all motherboards. The most common form factor is the ATX.


Central Processing Unit


The Central Processing Unit, or CPU, is one of the most important aspects of a motherboard. The two main processer manufacturers are Intel and AMD. Due to physical differences in the way the CPU connects to the motherboard, a motherboard will support one or the other, not both.


Chipset


The chipset is the actual component responsible for relaying information between the other components of the motherboard. The chipset cannot be upgraded without upgrading the whole motherboard.

Peripherals Are Not Working On An Asus A8ne

Peripheral ports are central to the functions of a computer and are just as important as the processor, hard drive and random access memory. Some peripherals are even required to use the computer; if the ASUS A8N-E fails to detect a keyboard, for example, it will emit a series of beeps and won't boot to the operating system. In the worst of cases, the peripheral ports stop working because the A8N-E is failing - but even this can be circumvented in some situations.


BIOS


The basic input/output system has several responsibilities; among them is the configuration and management of installed hardware. However, the hardware settings on the ASUS A8N-E aren't written in stone; the motherboard provides access to a system setup program that enables you to change how the BIOS handles hardware. Pressing "Del" or "Delete" as the computer is booting will load the BIOS software. On the Advanced screen is a sub-menu called Onboard Device Configuration. This sub-menu contains settings that enable you to enable or disable the USB, Ethernet, serial and parallel ports. If any of the preceding peripheral ports have stopped working, check the BIOS to confirm that these ports are not disabled.


Expansion Cards


The ASUS A8N-E features three available peripheral component interconnect slots, two PCI Express x1 slots, one PCIe x4 slot and one PCIe x16 slot. You can install additional expansion cards to these slots to add extra features to the ASUS A8N-E. For example, the motherboard doesn't come with a built-in graphics card, so to add video support to the PC, you must install a graphics card to the PCIe x16 slot. If the peripheral ports attached to that card stop working - but have worked in the past without problem - the expansion card might be dead.


Hardware Conflicts


To perform specific tasks on a computer, the installed hardware must get permission from the central processing unit. The hardware sends these requests to the CPU via interrupt request channels. Each hardware component is assigned an IRQ. PCI and PCIe cards can share IRQs, but not all IRQs can be shared. Because IRQ configurations can be complex, it's best to let the BIOS do it. On the Frequency/Voltage Control sub-menu - accessed from the Advanced screen - change Resources Controlled By to Auto to enable the motherboard to configure IRQs automatically.


Motherboard Failure


Sometimes, the peripheral ports stop working because the circuit or component on the board that controls that port is damaged. If all of the peripheral ports no longer work, then the best option is to replace your ASUS A8N-E. However, if just one or two peripheral ports have failed, install an expansion card instead that offers the same ports. For example, if the USB ports stop working, add a USB card to the PCIe x1 or PCIe x4 slot, then disable the onboard USB ports in the BIOS.

The Sony PlayStation Portable is a portable hand-held gaming device. It uses a battery pack that allows you to take your gaming on the road and play wherever you are. Since there are several versions of the PSP hardware, there are also several battery packs go with them. If your PSP does not recognize your battery, it may be dead or simply not compatible with your PSP model.


Instructions


1. Charge the battery with the DC power adapter. If your PSP will not work on battery power, the battery may simply be drained and in need of a charge.


2. Check that the battery you are using is compatible with your PSP model. The PSP-180 and PSP-280 battery packs are only compatible with the PSP-1001 model. If you have a PSP-2001 or PSP-30001, you will need the SCPH-98552 battery pack.


3. Replace your battery. If you are using the proper battery and it will not take a charge, then it may be depleted. Batteries have a limited lifespan, decreasing the amount of charge they can hold over time. Depending on the conditions the battery was used in and how often it was used and charged, this lifespan can be fairly short. You may need to replace the battery or only run your PSP off the DC power adapter.

Construction performance specifications may lead to a higher quality project.


Performance specifications in construction refers to the objectives or standards an architect, engineer or project owner desires for particular project. Specifications may include items related to actual performance, performance based on certain specifications and warranties. Performance specifications focus on the final product the contractor delivers to the project owner, including materials, quality of workmanship and other matters controlled by the contractor.


General and Unique Specifications


Most fields have general specifications that members are expected to follow during construction. Organizations such as the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and American National Standards Institute (ANSI) issue these guidelines. Other entities such as the American Welding Society, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials or National Electrical Contractors Association list unique specifications for construction trades or facilities. The standards usually reflect local policy conditions, regulations and other factors.


Contractor's Judgment


Some performance specifications require the contractor to exercise professional judgment when drawings, specifications or building codes may not suffice. For instance, excavation of a site must cover an area that allows "adequate" space for inspections, the proper operation of equipment and machinery and other construction-related activities. Each contractor may interpret "adequate" differently. In comparison, standards that require design tolerances within plus or minus six inches require a measurement. The final design of the structure or the layout of the site may make a six-inch tolerance unsuitable. Performance specification requires an understanding between the contractor, designer and project owner that the contractors need the flexibility to interpret certain wordings such as "adequate." Pre-specifying most or all operations may lead to unintended inaccuracies.


Required Performance


Construction performance specification has evolved to where instead of stipulating the construction procedures, the specification addresses the quality of the finished structure. The contractor has the leeway to determine the methods employed to obtain the desired results. For example, conventional roadwork specifications gave precise instructions for the makeup of the asphalt used to construct the road, the temperature of the composition and the procedures for compaction of the material. Today, the contract may specify the performance of the pavement against water penetration, permanence or strength. The contractor would have the flexibility to get the job done.


Pros and Cons of Performance Specifications


Performance specification gives the contractor latitude for creativity. This approach facilities the development of new practices and technologies. It allows "free" competition. This approach works for all kinds of projects. The contractor, not the engineer or architect, is responsible for the technical aspect of the projects. However, performance specification does not put the contractor on an equal basis during the bid process. Also, enforcement becomes more challenging and requires clear definition of all criteria.

Removing A Gateway Laptop Motherboard

Fortunately, you do not need to remove the keyboard in your Gateway to remove the motherboard.


Your Gateway, like any laptop, is built to be relatively light and compact so that you may easily transport the device. Unfortunately, to achieve this convenience, Gateway engineers the hardware inside of its laptops to fit perfectly into the smallest possible space. Though the removal of your Gateway laptop motherboard is not particularly challenging, you must be prepared to spend at least an hour unscrewing the countless screws that hold every piece of hardware into place above the motherboard.


Instructions


1. Turn the computer completely off from the operating system start menu. The computer cannot be on "Standby" or "Hibernate" due to the risk of damaging internal components.


2. Unplug the A/C power supply cord from the laptop, if you are running on wall power.


3. Remove the Gateway laptop's battery by moving the lock tab into the "Unlock" position. Slide the longer tab to the right in order to release the battery. Set the battery to the side.


4. Remove all screws on the underside of your laptop. Depending on your Gateway model, you may have 10 to 20 screws holding the bottom in place. Place all screws in a secure place.


5. Remove the bottom plastic base of the laptop.


6. Unscrew the four laptop fan screws in order to take the device off of the motherboard.


7. Remove the laptop memory by pushing down on the locking tabs and pulling the memory sticks up.


8. Unplug the power-supply wire that connects to the motherboard, as well as the disk-drive wire and hard-drive wires. The wires should simply slide off of the motherboard connectors using little force.


9. Remove the screws holding your network adapter, USB, audio and any other ports to your motherboard. The motherboard cannot be lifted out of a Gateway laptop with the ports still attached because the ports are often part of the case assembly.


10. Locate all of the motherboard mounting screws and remove them carefully. Do not scratch the motherboard with your screwdriver, as this can completely ruin the device.


11. Lift the motherboard out of the laptop casing.

Reset An Emachine Computer

You can reset an eMachine computer.


Most people who own an eMachine computer will find that they will need to reset the computer at some point. It is a fact that PCs are more prone to viruses and malware than Macintosh computers. Sometimes the only way to restore an eMachine is to simply reset it. Fortunately, it is not a difficult process to reset an eMachine computer.


Instructions


1. Turn off the computer. If the computer is in a state that it can be properly shut down, follow the normal shutdown process. On the other hand, if the computer is not reacting to anything, simply pull the cord from the wall.


2. Restart the computer. Plug the computer back into the wall and press the Power button. Wait for the eMachine to reach the screen that reads "Press F11 to start recovery." Once this screen appears, press the F11 key on the keyboard multiple times to make sure that it registers. If the recovery screen does not come up, you will need to turn the computer off and back on again and attempt to press the F11 button again when the prompt appears.


3. Select the proper option. After the recovery screen appears, there will be a list of recovery options. Scroll to the option that says "Full System Restore (with Backup)." Choosing this option will copy all of the contents of the hard disk to the c:\\My Backup directory. This will ensure that important files that have been created on the computer will not be deleted. However, the applications on the computer will need to be reinstalled.


4. Allow the system restore to run its course. Depending on the age and effectiveness of the eMachine computer, it is possible this process could take up to 45 minutes. When the system restore is complete, the computer will restart itself.


5. Reinstall applications. Any of the files created on the computer should be saved. However, the applications that created them need to be reinstalled.

Stepbystep Gold Recovery From Circuit Boards

Circuit boards inside electronic devices use a small amount of gold on key connections because of its conductivity and other properties. While many circuit boards are simply discarded, some companies--and even individuals--have turned to gold reclamation to strip circuit boards of their small quantities of gold.


Cleaning the Circuit Board


When a circuit board is first pulled out of a computer for gold reclamation, it is covered in miscellaneous circuitry and devices that have no gold in them. They must be stripped from the board before the gold can be recovered. This process is performed either by hand or machines, and involves removing any non-gold materials from the board, including integrated circuits, screws and batteries. Once these extra pieces have been removed and safely discarded, the actual gold reclamation process can begin.


Removing the Gold


Gold can be removed from circuit boards in a variety of ways. It can be scraped off of the boards by hand, which is time consuming, but yields excellent results. The gold can also be removed via a process known as reverse electroplating, where a chemical solution and electricity are used to draw the gold off of the circuit board. Finally, gold can be removed by dissolving it in a harsh chemical bath, then drained and purified. Chemical baths are some of the most common form of gold reclamation, and while dangerous for individuals to perform, provide the best results.


Purifying the Gold


Once gold has been scraped or dissolved from a circuit board, it must be purified and melted down before it can be sold. The purification process depends largely on the removal process that was used. If electroplating was used, the gold can be scraped off of the electrode used to draw the gold off of the circuit board. If the gold was scraped off of the circuit boards by hand, it can be filtered for any non-gold particulates and melted down. If, however, the gold was removed in a chemical bath, a lengthy filtration process is required before the gold is pure enough to melt down. This purification process involves running the gold through a series of chemical baths and filtration systems, which separate the gold from other metals that may have been dissolved from the circuit board.

Instructions

Pentium 3 Vs Pentium 4 In Computer Architecture

Intel has released Pentium processors since 1992, with versions of the Pentium 3 processor debuting in 1999 and 2000, and the Pentium 4 in 2001, 2002 and 2004. Processors process instructions for the computer in the computer's architecture.


Capabilities


The Pentium 3 processor broke the 1 GHz barrier in 2000 and the final models had a speed of 1.4 GHz. Pentium 3 processors used the SSE instruction set and the P6 microarchitecture. Pentium 4 processors reached speeds of 3.8 GHz, used the SSE 2 and SSE 3 instruction sets, and could handle 64-bit instructions.


Features


The Pentium 4 processor featured a new socket design due to a change to its NetBurst microarchitecture, which greatly improved the technique the processor used to pipeline instructions. Pentium 3 processors upgraded multimedia capabilities with new instructions. The Pentium 3 processor also provided backwards compatibility with the Pentium 2 so that users could add the it without needing a new motherboard.


Problems


The Pentium 3 processor had problems with encryption and security due to a pre-programmed electronic serial number. Major concerns involved what would happen in the event that the serial numbers were compromised. The Pentium 4 processor had overheating issues. It created too much heat for the power it offered and required too many resources to cool itself.

Windows operating systems can generally be obtained in two ways: in a retail box, or as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) disc. There are advantages and disadvantages to buying an OEM disc instead of the retail version of Windows.


Pricing


The primary advantage of buying OEM is that the cost is much lower. You can expect to pay as much as half the cost of a retail copy of Windows Vista as of 2009.


OEM Linked to Hardware


However, an OEM install is tied to the computer's motherboard. If you ever replace the motherboard, your license is no longer valid and may be revoked.


Retail Not Linked


The retail version allows you to make as many changes to your hardware as you like, although you may be required to verify your license with Microsoft if you make a large number of changes in a short amount of time.


Getting Support


Another issue is customer support. You can contact Microsoft if you have problems with the retail version. However, the OEM version can only be supported by the vendor from whom you purchased it.


32-Bit and 64-Bit


The retail version of Vista includes the 32-bit version and the 64-bit version. OEM Vista only includes one of these types. If you get the wrong OEM version, you cannot return it.

Update Bios In Ubuntu

Flashing your BIOS from Ubuntu can solve BIOS problems.


If after upgrading to Linux Ubuntu, you decide to add new pieces of hardware that aren't supported by the current BIOS or some part of the BIOS is damaged, you will need to update (or flash) the BIOS. A common problem is that the motherboard vendor only offers BIOS flash utilities based on Microsoft DOS. Fortunately, there is a method of flashing the BIOS from Ubuntu, without DOS or Windows.


Instructions


Method


1. Download FreeDOS (see Resources) and unpack it.


2. Create a temporary directory. Create a subdirectory inside it named "cdr" (without quotation marks).


3. Mount the unpacked FreeDOS image to the cdr folder inside the temporary directory.


4. Download the newest BIOS from your motherboard manufacturer. Unpack the contents of your downloaded compressed archive. Copy the new BIOS and associated flashing utility to the cdr folder inside the temporary directory.


5. Create a hybrid filesystem by entering "mkisofs -o newBIOS.iso -b FDOEM.144 FDOEM.144" (without quotation marks) at the command line. Replace newBIOS with the name of your new BIOS.


6. Insert a blank CD into your CD drive. Enter "cdrecord -v newBIOS.iso" (without quotation marks) at the command line, again replacing newBIOS with the name of your updated BIOS. This will burn the ISO to a CD.


7. Reboot your computer and follow the vendor instructions to complete BIOS flashing.


Alternatives


8. FreeDOS is one operating system that can be used to update the BIOS in Ubuntu; however, there are alternatives, two of which are described in the following steps. Regardless of which operating system you choose, the method is still the same as outlined in the FreeDOS example above, except of course you must replace FreeDOS-specific filenames with those of the respective chosen operating system.


9. DR-DOS is a DOS type operating system originally developed by California-based computer software company Digital Research. It is now developed and sold by DRDOS, Inc. and can be bought and downloaded from their website (see under Resources). Among other things, this operating system features multi-tasking, stacker disk compression and a disk caching program.


10. ROM-DOS is a DOS solution provided by Datalight, and both the operating system and its documentation are available for download from their website (see under Resources). ROM-DOS features integrated support for long filenames, without the need for additional device drivers. This operating system also features a compact suite of connectivity tools, including the ability to send and receive emails and transfer files via FTP.

Xbox Games That Don'T Work On A 360

When Microsoft first debuted its Xbox 360 video gaming console, it made sure that the system could play several of the games from the original Xbox system. This backward compatibility allowed players to refrain from buying new versions of games for a new system. While many games can be played on both consoles, some will not work on the Xbox 360.


"James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire"


Electronic Arts released the shooting video game "James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire" for the Xbox in March 2002. The game is rated suitable for those 13 and over, and is also available on the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube. "Agent Under Fire" is an independent James Bond story not based on any of the movies. To succeed, players must use a number of different cars and weapons provided by the MI6 agency.


"Marvel: Ultimate Alliance"


Activision released the action video game "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" for Xbox, Game Boy Advance, PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable (PSP) and Nintendo Wii in October 2006. The game was also released for Xbox 360, but the Xbox version will not work with the newer console. "Ultimate Alliance" lets players play out battles between a group of superheroes and supervillains who are fighting for control. Created by Raven Software, the game is rated acceptable for players 13 and older.


"The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind"


Bethesda Softworks released the role-playing game "The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind" for PC and Xbox players in June 2002. Rated appropriate for players 13 and up, "Morrowind" is a game in which players assume the role of a character who is sent to a foreign land called Morrowind. Players must find items and talk to the people they meet in Morrowind to figure out what their mission really is.


"Psychonauts"


Majesco Games released the adventure game "Psychonauts" for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC in April 2005. Created by Double Fine Productions, the game is rated suitable only for players 13 and over. Although the game runs on the Xbox, Microsoft never made "Psychonauts" compatible with the Xbox 360. The game tells the story of a group of psychically gifted people who are suddenly plagued with nightmares. Players must get to the bottom of what is causing these dreams and why they are occurring.

If you watch carefully when your computer boots and prints out diagnostic information to the screen, you will see reference to the acronym "BIOS," which is a chip that forms an essential part of every computer's motherboard.


Meaning


BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System.


Function


The BIOS chip provides the absolute minimum software required to start a computer including basic functions for use of keyboards, disk drives and the monitor.


ROM


BIOS software is typically stored on a Read-Only Memory (ROM) chip that cannot be overwritten. This assures that hardware and software failures will not affect the BIOS.


Flash BIOS & BIOS Flashing


Many modern PCs have a Flash BIOS which stores its software on a flash memory chip. This means that a BIOS can be updated in the future if bugs or other problems are found by the manufacturer. This process is known as "BIOS flashing."

Alleviates Stress on Hard Disk


Both PC and Mac operating systems have software built-in that allows hard drives to create "virtual memory," if there is not enough memory installed on the system. The hard drive will spin more often and rapidly causing the hard drive to wear down more quickly and become unresponsive. Installing more DDR SDRAM memory reduces virtual memory use and alleviates some stress on the hard drive. The increased speed of DDR SDRAM acts as supporting hardware to the hard drive and decreases the wear over time on it.

History


The first member of the Pentium D family was introduced in 2005, and the first member of the Pentium Dual Core family was released in 2006.


Comparison


The Pentium D family is comprised of models that vary in clock frequency (speed), ranging from 2,667 MHz (model 805) to 4,096 MHz (model 960). The Pentium D has a much higher overall frequency than the Pentium Dual Core, having a 1,007 MHz advantage over the lowest-frequency Dual Core processor and a 267 MHz advantage over the highest-frequency Dual Core. The Pentium Dual Core ranges in frequencies that range from 1,600 MHz (model E2140) up to 3,333 MHz (model E6800). Despite a few models (E5300 and E5400), the Pentium D and Dual Core family all consist of the same socket type, Socket 775. On average, both processor families also have the same bus speed of 800 MHz. In a computer, the sound card is responsible for converting instructions from your CPU into sounds that you can hear. Sound cards were once enormous add-ons for a computer, taking up 12 inches of space or more. Today, many computers have the functionality of a sound card miniaturized into a single chip. Driver Issues

Most computer speakers will not produce audible sound unless they are connected to a power outlet.

Many of the computers that are sold today contain no sound card at all. Rather, all of the functions of a sound card are contained within a single chip on the computer's motherboard. This reduces the cost of the computer, but it can also harm game performance, because the complex mathematical calculations that would have been performed by the sound card are instead performed by the computer's CPU. This can cause a substantial reduction in game performance. Install a separate sound card if you spend a great deal of time playing games on your computer.


Motherboard Compatibility


Before purchasing a new sound card, ensure that your motherboard has the type of expansion slot required. Current sound cards are produced primarily for PCI and PCI Express slots, but you may also find ISA sound cards if you are shopping for used items. Installing an Nvidia AGP video card in your computer can increase graphics performance, especially in video games and applications such as Photoshop. Modern computer software and even operating systems rely heavily on video cards for fast performance. In order to enjoy the benefits of an Nvidia AGP video card, however, you must first make sure your system meets the minimum requirements.


AGP Slot


Your computer motherboard must have an AGP 8x or AGP 4x slot. Although AGP 8x is the newest AGP standard, it is backward-compatible with older 4x cards.


Power


Make sure your power supply is powerful enough for your video card. This generally isn't a problem for low-end and mid-range cards, but higher end cards usually have an additional power supply system requirement. This varies from card to card, but as a rule of thumb you need a 400-watt power supply or better to use a high-end video card.


Physical Space


Make sure you have enough physical space inside your computer for the video card. Again, this is usually only an issue for high-end video cards. Operating System

Problem Installing Xp With A Bios Version Acpi 1003 To An Asus P4xpx

If you cannot install Windows XP, then it is likely a problem with your hardware. If you are using the 1003 revision BIOS with the Asus P4XP-X, then this will be the cause of your error. Asus only officially links to 1004 and 1005 on their website in the BIOS revision history. On their CPU compatibility list, no CPUs are shown to be compatible with the 1003 revision firmware. This can sometimes happen with very early editions of motherboards that aren't quite ready for release. Flashing the BIOS to 1004 or 1005 will fix this problem.


Instructions


1. Check the CPU Support List (see Resources). Check with which BIOS revision your CPU is compatible.


2. Navigate to the BIOS download page (see Resources).


3. Download the BIOS revision compatible with your CPU.


4. Double-click the zip archive. Select the BIOS file. Press "Ctrl"and "C." Insert your floppy disk. Click "Start," type "A:\" and press "Enter." Press "Ctrl"and "V" to paste the BIOS revision. Eject the floppy disk


5. Turn pm your Asus computer. Press "ALT"and "F2" during the startup to load the EX Flash program. Insert the floppy disk. Type in the BIOS name. This will either be "p4xpx004.awd" or "p4xpx005.awd." Press "Enter."


6. Press "Y" to update the BIOS and then "Y" to confirm. When the BIOS flash is finished, press "Y" again and then any key to reboot. Eject the floppy disk.

Turn On The Pc Power Supply Without A Motherboard

Computers use standard ATX power supplies.


You can turn on your PC power supply without the use of the motherboard by creating a jumper between the appropriate wires on the power supply plug. This can be beneficial if you want to add a second power supply to your computer of simply if you need to test the power supply without a computer. Dubbed the "paperclip trick," this task is one you can perform in only a few minutes.


Instructions


1. Turn off your computer and disconnect all cables from the back of your system.


2. Turn the switch on the back of the power supply (back of the computer) to the "O" or "Off" setting. Note that "I" is the "On" setting.


3. Open the computer case and unplug the ATX power connector that runs from the power supply to the motherboard. You can easily recognize the ATX power connector by the many colored wires connected to a large plastic 20 or 24 pin connector.


4. Bend a normal paperclip into a "U" shape. Do not use an insulated paperclip.


5. Locate the green and black wires that run to the plastic ATX power connector. Insert one end of the paperclip into the green wire connector and the other into the black wire next to it. Note that your power supply might have two black wires. These are ground wires and you should connect the paperclip to the black wire immediately next to the green wire.


6. Wrap the end of the power connector, including the paper clip, in electrical tape. Ensure that you cover the entire paper clip and power connector, as they will conduct electricity when you switch the power supply on.


7. Plug the power supply back into the wall outlet. Turn the switch on the back of the power supply to the "I" or "On" setting and the power supply will power on and run until you turn the switch on the back of the unit off again.

The Fastest Asus Socket 478 Motherboards

ASUS made several socket 478 motherboards, with revisions over the years.


The socket 478 motherboard uses the Intel 865 chipset; it was originally released for the Pentium IV processor, which debuted in 2001, and different boards supported variations on the Pentium IV and Celeron. ASUS is a manufacturer of motherboards, both sold directly to consumer and sold to computer manufacturers and produced several socket 478 motherboards, updating them as Intel updated the 865 chipset. ASUS has ceased manufacturing socket 478 motherboards, as Intel no longer produces processors for them; they can still be found for sale as vendors retain inventory.


ASUS P4P800 SE Motherboard


This motherboard was one of the last two models ASUS produced and ran with the Intel 865PE chipset (the PE at the end stands for Performance Edition). This chip set supported an 800 Mhz front side bus, the fastest of any Pentium IV chipset, and dual-channel 400 MHz DDR memory. Because it was designed explicitly for Intel's Pentium IV CPU, it included support for Intel's Hyper-Threading out of order execution instructions. This feature is disabled on the Celeron CPUs, and Celeron-focused motherboards disabled the pin connector that turned it on. In terms of on-board hardware, it supported four DIMM sockets and could take a maximum of 4 GB of RAM. Its other expansion slots include 5 PCI ports and one 8x AGP port, while its hard drive connectors included a single ultra DMA plug and two SATA ports.


ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe


ASUS' other 865PE chipset motherboard was the ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe, which supported the same CPU and RAM configuration (4 GB Max in four DIMM slots, limited to 400 MHz DDR RAM). It could handle the same CPUs, the Prescott CPU cores. ASUS enabled more hardware on the motherboard, including a third-party RAID controller connected to the SATA ports. It has the same expansion ports---one AGP 8x and five PCI--as the ASUS P4P800-SE. Because this motherboard was marketed to high-end users, it has a number of additional features in the BIOS.


ASUS P4P800-VM


This was ASUS' first Prescott-compatible motherboard and used the 865G chip set. It allows for slightly faster (and harder to find) RAM than the two later motherboards and has only three PCI slots, plus the 8x AGP slot. It was one of the first Pentium IV boards to have the SATA port for faster hard drive connectivity and can support both the Intel Celeron and Pentium IV. It is the highest-end motherboard with Socket 478 Celeron support but is considered a lower-end board than the other two.
